I can't seem to find the other photos of the original bathroom but lets just say it didn't get any better. This bathroom was off the rooms that became the kitchen. The original bathroom was pretty big so we took some of that space for the kitchen and made this room smaller.
A good deal of thought went into deciding if we should make this a half bathroom or leave it as a full. We didn't really NEED a full bath on the main floor. Ultimately, we decided that the claw foot tub could live in here and we could leave it as a full. I figure the tub can come in handy for future dog/children baths. And even if we rarely use it for whats its intended for, at least we saved the original tub and its pretty too look at. Time will tell if its a practical decision or not.
The layout of this bathroom is one of those things that I made a major boo-boo on. As you can see from the photo, the door swings open right into the tub. How did I miss that detail? Well, I did and it was too late to fix once I did. I suppose I could have the door switched to swing the other way at some point but I'll live with it for now.
Here are the specs in case you're interested:
-tiles are carrera marble - hex on the floor, subway on the wall
-paint is Benjamin Moores "gray owl" (which actually looks a tiny bit green)
-the toilet is a Kohler Memoir
-sink & faucet is Porcher
-mirror, lights & shelf from pottery barn
The walls look really bare in here so I definitely need something on the walls. For some reason, I think the marble tiles would look cool with some high contrast black and whites of the NYC subway or maybe grand central? But Im not sold on that idea either. Open to suggestions.

I was thinking as I was reading and looking at the pics that some really stunning B&Ws of the city would be gorgeous in there and lo and behold...you were thinking the same thing. I love it. And, for what it's worth, I think you made the right decision on keeping the tub. If you do have kids - there will be plenty of times when you'll just want to dunk them in a tub (think spaghetti dinners) rather than hoist them through the house dragging whatever is all over them. Same thing for dogs. Great job!

ReplyDeleteThanks so much all. It definitely feels unfinished right now - sort of bland. But Ill get around to punching it up eventually. This is the bathroom guests will use so I want to make it looked pulled together.
My bathroom door does swing into the tub as well - I'm pre-renovation, so I may end up fixing this one day (but my renovation is waiting until I am solvent again). However, there is a little doorstop on the back of the door - a small square of rubber padding - that is set at exactly the right height to soften the impact of the door on teh tub, and it looks great. You might want to consider doing something like that to protect your tub. Then I truly don't think anyone woudl give it a thought.

that is the best before shot ever, although you did an amazing job transforming , there was no were to go but up , wouldn't you say , I hope no one had used that for some time.

I know its hard to believe that someone actually lived in the house while that bathroom looked that way. The whole house looked abandoned to me (or any normal person) but there was an old guy living right in the mess.

ReplyDeleteI wanted carrera in our bathroom but since it is the tiny main bath and I have two little boys peeing all over the place (and didn't want stains), I opted for ceramic tile.

ReplyDeleteThat is an amazing before and after, I can't believe somebody was living there before! That room is gorgeous now but I really want to see some color in there - some bright towels and rugs, and some flowers on that tiny shelf if they'll fit. However, I do agree that some big black and white photos would look great in there. Great job!

ReplyDeleteI agree it needs some accessories but I don't want to add any bright colors. Thats just not my thing really. Particularily in a bathroom, I think a quiet color scheme is nice.

Love the bathroom! My first thought for making it "punchier" is to use paint. Since the bathroom is a fairly small room, and since the tiles/fixtures are a nice simple white, you can get away with a pretty bold color. Myself, I'd do a watermelon pink, or aquamarine, or some other such color that wouldn't fly in a larger room. You can really have fun with the color in there.

ReplyDeleteMy first thought was either little old person or abandoned. Poor little guy it just gets too hard for them to clean and they get afraid of falling. We would have to go clean my uncle's house from time to time to keep it looking decent.
ReplyDeleteThen there was the excentric great uncle that kept every newspaper and Prince Albert can he ever bought. I don't even want to think about what his bathroom might have looked like!
As for the door...you don't access the tub nearly as much as the other side of the room. So, other than adding that rubber stopper to protect the finish on the tub, I would leave it alone. Unless there is a way to make a pocket door! LOL! That would get it COMPLETELY out of the way.
I'm filing away lots of great gray paint colors... this is an amazing renovation. And I can only imagine the effort! Thanks for judging CSI last week!
