In my never ending quest to have a put together master bedroom, I've toyed with the idea of putting in a small chair. I suspect my cat will get more practical use out of it than we will but it would be nice to have somewhere to sit down to put my socks on. Sometimes a girl needs a little extravagance. Case in point, this lovely chair I photographed in the bathroom of LaDuree
Laduree bathroom, Paris 2007. Thats me in the mirror!
As you might have already guessed - I'm extremely cheap! I'm not spending a fortune on a chair I'll sit in for 90 seconds a day. So my hunt for cheap seats is on. And I can't decide if I like anything I've found enough to take the plunge. What do you think?
Lets start off with the granddaddy of cheap chairs, the Ikea Ektorp.
A steal at $130, this is my front runner. What could be finer?
Other options include this plain jane slipper chair from Target at $279.
A bit more contemporary in styling and even more pricey ($300) is Jc Penney's Meghan chair.
Bonus there is that it can be upholstered in a few different shades including this very matchy-matchy damask.
With that in mind, we have to consider Target's fairly new line of patterned slipper chairs. All at less than $300 with coupon right now.
These two choices are my favorite but I'm not sure if this pattern will work so well in the space as it competes with the pretty bold black and cream pattern on the bed.
So what do you think of these cheap seat options? Which one is your choice? Any alternatives?
Furniture tangent below...
And totally unrelated and impossible to work in my bedroom is this chair that I absolutely adore from Overstock for $230. Fushia and gray wood? Sign me up. But I have no place to put it so I'll have to adore it from afar.
I'm totally digging that fuschia side chair and wondering if I can work it into my decor now....
ReplyDeleteMy vote is for the plain jane slipper chair from Tarjay. It's versatile and you can add a fun pillow or switch pillows anytime or no pillow at all.
Okay this reply is really for your curtains post.
ReplyDeleteI can totally see your problem! Cos I have the same problem! I bought these beautiful curtain fabrics and got them stitched in India. Talk about not being able to visualize...they totally overwhelm the room. But I did manage a work around though...something that could be useful for you.... I have three panels in front of sheers, so I tied the panels together. I keep the drapes tied most of the time, except when I need a total blackout. This lets people see the beautiful sheers behind and still lets a lot of light in.
Can you return you outside drapes? I think that you have too much fabric on the drapes altogether. I would go for 3/4th of 1/2 of the width and increase the length. You can then tie the drapes to a side most of the time and let the sheers be seen. The extra length will let the drapes "pool" down on the floor...a style in keeping with the rest of your house. these tweaks should let you stick to your fabric and style choices but reduce the cluttered/overwhelmed look and let the architecture shine through.
I love the simple white crisp one .
ReplyDeleteI love having my slipcovered wing chair in my room and for the $25~ it cost me I could not go wrong.
Check craigslist maybe the perfect chair is waiting for you there.
The Ikea one is an eyesore. I like the patterned Target ones.
ReplyDeleteI really like the plain jane slipper chair, you could put different color cushions on in, put a colored throw on it, if you want more color.
ReplyDeleteI love the shape and size of the fushia chair. Maybe you could find something similar (to that or the one in the first image) at a thrift store or Craigslist and have it reupholstered - it's a little more work but I think it would be more special and rewarding.
ReplyDeleteI'm voting for the plain chair from Target. Definitely the most versatile and the shape is nice too.
ReplyDeleteI'd go with the bright white rather than a pattern, you could always throw a nice pillow for a little kick. For the price, I like the IKEA and the Target chairs.
ReplyDeletei have a pair of the slipper chair from target...i bought the dolce ones (about $130 each?)...I'm tired of the color, so i'm in the process of making slipcovers for it. so it's quite versatile
ReplyDeleteI love slipper chairs but I have two of the Ikea ones. LOL If you do decide to get an ikea there's a company called Bemz that does custom slip covers for most of Ikea's furniture: http://www.bemz.com/index.php/prod_id/3/page/shop/model_id/60/
ReplyDeleteDon't forget to look at Overstock - they often have great furniture and the shipping is dirt cheap.
I'm leaning towards the IKEA chair.
ReplyDeleteHomegoods has some fairly inexpensive chairs right now. I'd go to a few of them since they don't all carry the same merchandise.
ReplyDeleteGood luck.
I'm digging the slipper chair and I agree that HomeGoods often has affordable chairs similar to these! hugs from Conroe, TX!
ReplyDeleteYou know, if there is one thing I've learned throughout my decorating trials and tribulations, I seem to have around me the pieces that I fell in love with at first sight. There were many times when I thought ... I have no place for that! But eventually, those pieces have worked ... I'd go for the Overstock chair if you love it. Add a splash of color to your bedroom. Especially if it makes you happy just looking at it!
ReplyDeleteI like your Target choices too! :) I've been eying that Ektorp for awhile for my Family room, but I think I need the chair that's a little bit larger.
ReplyDeleteYou are so crafty, I would think you could find a great thrift store/yard sale chair and recover the seat and paint it, no?
ReplyDeleteI like the Target chairs.
ReplyDeleteMy sister-in-law has the Ikea chairs in her sunporch and I would stay away from them. They are shallow and for some reason, they tip over easily. I think the slipper chairs are a little more interesting to look at...even the plain white ones.
Thanks for all the suggestions...love to hear them.
ReplyDeleteIm a big fan of second hand furniture but I don't do second hand upholstered items. Reupholstering costs WAY more than buying new. Not to mention the bed bugs and god knows what can live in them. Unless I know the history, it gives me the heeby jeebies.
I do love that gray and fushia chair but I wouldn't love it in my bedroom. It doesn't work at all. On top of that, its more of a dining room or office chair to me.
I put one of my side chairs in my bedroom but it just doesn't look right. I think it's the chair and not the spot I've chosen. I really like the patterned chairs you posted above but I've got a lot of patterns going on with my curtains. Maybe the plain one you posted will work. I've also seen options on overstock.com.
ReplyDeleteCan you get a custom slipcover/upholstery for the Ikea chair and have it come it at the same budget as the JCP chair?
ReplyDeleteI do, I do!!!! I'm partial to the Ikea chair and then the plain jane slipper chair.
ReplyDeleteI must say I have always been a fan of the first chair from Ikea, although I also like the plain white chair from Target. I say you keep it neutral with either chair.
ReplyDeleteCream Tar-jay all the way, with a drop dead gorgeous pillow and of course a complimentary chenile blanky. Cozy wozy !
ReplyDeleteThe slipper chair is easiest to slipcover because of the squarish lines, just in case that is an issue! Slipcovers with straight lines are not hard to do at all.
ReplyDeleteScribbler
My friend just purchased two of the IKEA Ektorp chairs for her new den. They look great, the slipcover just needed a little ironing to look as fabulously straight as the picture. Good choice for looks and on the cheap! I also do love the new Target chair.
ReplyDeleteI've seen the Ikea chair done in a thick linen...and it was Gaw-jus!!
ReplyDeleteI don't think you would lose with any. Although I wouldn't do a print. But that is me. More versatility.
I think the plain jane from Target. Doesn't compete and you can find a nice pillow to compliment you bed.
ReplyDeleteIt should read YOUR bed. I guess I should read it before I post:)
ReplyDeleteI vote for the patterned slipper chairs from target. love the one on the right.
ReplyDeleteI vote for the slipper chair but would love to see you find a chair in need of TLC and rehab it. I love your rehab posts.
ReplyDeletePS - would a chaise work in your room? not sure of how much space you are working with but I love Chaises in boudoirs, so sexy! (plus it fuels my dream of eating bon bons all day lounging on my chaise).

Ikea or plain slipper chair. Very versatile.
ReplyDeleteI would go with a neutral chair so that it doesn't compete with the fabulous bed, but I do like the Target patterned chair on the left, a more subtle pattern. Are these sipper chairs to chunky for the space? The inspiration chair had a much lighter feel.
ReplyDeleteI like the pattered Target slipper chairs but would probably choose a neutral shade. Wish we had Target here. I have been thinking about the el cheap Ecktorp chair for my office (with the little matching footstool). I like it in the white. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteP.S. We paid $1000 for the coffee table, which was originally $1600 here, likely with extra import costs. We always pay through the nose for american fare! : )
i LOVE the overstock chair!!! Why not get that for your bedroom!!! complimentary to your black and cream bedding!
ReplyDeleteI don't think you found the right chair yet if not the overstock one!
Sorry, I'm distracted from picking a chair because all I can think about are Laduree's macaroons. Yuuuum.
ReplyDeleteOk, chair wise I love the overstock one. Otherwise the JCPenney one is very nice in the cream.
Look for an antique or thrift store find and make it yours.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see some tufting, and something with nail heads - like your head-board. Could be a neutral or a color.

Gee, I really like the Ikea chair but it seems that not to many of us do. With some pretty pillows, if you did a pillow, this would be fab. And when I see it I kinda go.. wow, that's Ikea?!
ReplyDeleteI also LOVE the overstock chair. Such a great find. It would actually work in my home that has a lot of gray. Man, I want this!
I like the Ikea chair (I always have}, and it's a steal.
ReplyDeletehave you seen the pbteen oh la la chair? it has a white frame with blue fabric...might be too bright...but the lines are fantastic! otherwise I vote plain jane :)
ReplyDeleteI almost got one of those from TARGET myself...but after reading reviews I got a little weary. People were saying that they were very short .too close to the ground and small. I wanted a great accent piece..and although I liked the pattern, something bigger seemed more appropriate.
ReplyDeleteI just got the wing back chair from Pier 1...its on my site" home tour" - i love it.

I actually was thinking about ordering one of the plain slipper chairs from Target. You should order it, and share your opinion. To help me decide. :)
ReplyDeleteSomething about the first target chair. It's speaking to me. I cast my vote for that one.
ReplyDeleteI'm fresh back from vacay and went to Tarjay today...sat in that slipper chair and I have to day I think it's a deal. The only by me only had the plain one, but it was fine and I like the idea of being able to swap out different pillows.
ReplyDeleteLove the slipper chair, but more importantly love the Overstock chair and I'm headed there right now to see if they still have it!
ReplyDeletegreat chair. Maybe I can get it for my dining room. It's pretty wild. I am however unsure if hubby may find this a little too wild.
ReplyDeleteOh may I add that the chair is on sale now for $149!
