2009 Home Resolutions Revisited

Much like everyone else, January is a time to reflect on what I have (or have not) accomplished in the last 12 months. A bit more than a year ago, I posted this home decor to-do list.

Todo2009WEB

So how did I do? Lets go to the blog files!

#1 I totally did clean out the box room. Admitedly, it was watching an episode of Hoarders that motivated me but its done.
Score: 1 me, 0 to-do list.

#2, This room is not really quite finished yet (a few more little things are needed) nor did it even get this far until Jan 2010. But hey - I should get some credit, right? So lets call it a split.
Score: 1.5 me, 0.5 to do list

#3. In fairness, I didn't really need that much in here but I did find 3 pieces of furniture for the bedroom without spending a fortune. 2 second hand nightstands and 1 Target chair. I'm deducting 0.25 for never getting around to painting the nightstand on the left.
Score: 2.25 me, 0.75 to-do list

# 4. Not sure about this one. I did manage a couple of things like those black lamps. And I did put quite a bit of time into those collages.

But I really didn't finish. So I can only justify a measly quarter of a point.
Score: 2.5 me, 1.5 to-do.

#5. Total failure here. I did get one closet organized for about 10 minutes (while all of the other closets in the house remained in complete chaos) and then I messed it up immediately afterward.
Score: 2.5 me, 2.5 to-do

Eek! This is a close one.

#6. Huzzah - I definitely got the guest bedroom done. In your face, to-do list!
GuestRoom1
Score: 3.5 me, 2.5 to-do

#7. Hmmm... another tough one. I did finally get a coffee table, covered up the open windows, added 2 purdy & cheap damask ottomans, made a fun personalized pillow.

But most of those things aren't really accessories, are they? The problem is I really don't know how to accessorize in here. I don't like clutter. My cat knocks things over. I'm verry happy with all the major pieces. But a finished room has accessories! So call me confused..I just don't know what to do beside lay on the couch. Suggestions are welcome but until I sort it out, Im giving myself no points on this front.

Final score: 3.5 me, 3.5 to-do.

So how did I do? I guess it depends on how you keep score. If this were a test, I would have a score of 50% - clearly a big fat F! Or if you are of the sporting mind, its a draw. Either way - I hope I have better luck this year.

So what is on your home to-do list for 2010? How did you do in 2009?

Oh, I do feel good that I did get some things accomplished. Just a bit bummed that its so little of what I had hoped to do. I thought I did better against that list. But there really is no big rush, I just like to set arbitrary goals for myself. haha

  3. I love to-do lists, but I find them a bit discouraging when everything takes longer than expected. However, I still plan to finish our basement remodel, revamp some kitchen features and start landscaping the backyard.
    We'll see--only about 11 months left!

  4. Take your time... your limestone look fab fab FAB. Hurrying isn't always a good thing... Exhibit A:

We moved from big city high-rise (a.k.a. tiny) into a big suburbanite home last year... completely furnished and decorated it in no time at all. Decorated too fast... didn't take the time to design. Oh shwell.... Had to start a design blog because of it!

Whatever to do or don't get one... we'll be here to look at your gorgeous pics!

  5. In the long run you will definitely be happier with the outcome if you don't rush to complete any of the to do's. But as a Type A personality myself, I can relate to your desire to check things off the list! Thanks for sharing your beautiful home with us.

  6. Um...My dog ate my list.

    Starting all over from scratch.

    Yep.

And FWIW...I LOVE everything you have done! So...10 points from the Russian Judge!

  7. I think you are a little hard on yourself. The box room looks great. Really, everything looks great, and if there aren't accessories that you love, it's better to leave them out until inspiration strikes. Most of us have too many accessories and too much clutter. Your home is refreshing to look at. I think you should give yourself an A (you can add a minus if you want to remember the things you didn't completely finish). And be excited about what you are working on now!

  8. I think you need to give yourself more credit. The box room required stripping all the paint off of the door which took a lot of time and was not exactly what you were anticipating for the room. Obstacles always get in the way of completing a vision, but I think you did a lot of work and it paid off - your house is amazing.

I don't have a "home" of my own yet. I'm in college and have an apartment with some friends during the school year and live with my parents the rest of the time. I'm working on making both more homey but with no money and little space to call my own its tough. I usually just fix things when they look wrong or change it up when I get sick of things as the year progresses.

  9. I'm thinking you did pretty well. My problem is that I make a list about once a month and the master list continues to grow and grow and gr...

  10. Hmm I think that even though it's technically a "tie", you really won because the changes you made in your home last year are FABULOUS! I remember you trying to turn the luggage into a table and not having such great luck...but it looks SO great piled by the window! Such a neat accessory for the guest room :) Hope this year of goals goes even better! Happy New Year!

Thanks everyone - appreciate the encouragement.

I totally understand what you mean by not rushing it - but if I don't put myself to task then nothing will ever get done. After a while, I start not noticing the things that annoy me at first. That doesn't make it any less annoying in general - I just stop seeing it. And I definitely don't want that. In my last house I let so many things I wanted to do go on for years b/c I figured there was no rush. But then I always felt like my home was half done. I don't want that to happen here.

  12. You should feel entirely proud of all your accomplishments- not many people even attempt half of the projects that you managed to close. And hey, there is always 2010 for the other half. Don't even bat an eyelash at the things yet to come- just enjoy the ride along the way. ;)

  16. I think you've done great! I know the feeling of having a house only "half" done! I just moved in my house over the summer, and I still have sooo much to do! I try and tackle one thing/room at a time. Hopefully by the end of this year I'll at least feel like my house is 3/4 done;o)

  17. Let me just say that we moved to a new state and a new house and I have been confused since I got here:) I am usually have it together but this house has been a challenge. I think you have done a great job. I like it all. I think that I have the same headboard that is in your guest room. I have that one in my guest room and I love it.

  18. Love, love, love, the collages!

  19. I think a 3.5 is actually pretty good!! It's way better than zip (like my score), and the things you have done are really well done.

I had a awful year home wise in 2009, to busy on the work front (and the holiday front too i guess, so it wasn't all bad) - hoping to achieve great things in 2010.

Looking forward to seeing 2010 in your home also, i think you've done a fab job, ticking off huge things. The details and accessories will come through over time, and look so much better for having happened that way too :)

  20. I'm going to give you an extra 1% for evaluating your success, so that gives you 51% and ... contrats, you pass!!! I had to laugh at you handing out 0.25% points. That would be me all the way. I think you did a terrific job and some of the goals were actually 2-year goals and you just didn't know it.

  21. Not good in 2009. I am cautiously optimistic about 2010!

  22. I didn't realize the stacked suitcases made it into the guest room...perfect! Guests...travel...suitcases... :-) I agree with Lavendar & Lilies...I'm cautiously optimistic about 2010 and we have big plans so if we get half of them done I'll be thrilled.

  23. You have done a LOVELY job!! Projects are never ending are they?? I need to make my project to do list for 2010....but I am procrastinating. Ha Ha!

  25. i so love the collages they are beautiful!

  26. You definitely receive some credit for self evaluation. And more for inspiration: after reading this post I must write my own resolution list.

I have a couple of suggestions about accessorizing. At least this works for me. Find some pictures online or in magazines that you really like. Then mimic there lines. Accessorize your end table, coffee table, etc like the picture.

Of course your accessories will be different items. They will be your things, things you like. If the accessories that surround you are items you love, items you find beautiful you will love it!

    Your place is beautiful!

  28. I think you should cut yourself some slack.
What you accomplished from that list was GREAT!
Let's please realize that you're not sitting around eating bon-bons all day....
So, congrats to you and all your hard work (and thinking and plotting).
I wish I could say the same to myself---started painting the kitchen in March and still haven't finished AND I've put on @ 7lbs. from those bon-bons!!

I have your ottomans! I love them. I move them around from room to room as it suits my decorating bug. You have a great color scheme too.
