Flea'd: Ready to makeover chair

I threw out my back (don't I sound like the ultimate old lady) a few weeks ago and I have been on the mend ever since. It's really putting the literal cramp in my DIY projects. Lucky for me, my shopping abilities remain unscathed!

I picked up this chair at Brooklyn Flea from Millie+Corina (which looks quite a lot like this Jonathan Adler $650 bad boy) With the right makeover, I think its going to be perfect in the shore bedroom - finally replacing the kitchen chair currently there.

To work the way I want it, I need to paint and recover the cushion. Despite the apparent hatred for the chevron trend, I still really love the pattern (how uncool of me!) and like how this fabric pairs well with the orange so it might be a winner.

Also digging this honeycomb fabric from Spoonflower but I'm not so crazy about spending $40 for a little bit of it.

Any other fabric suggestions?

Wow that's a great find!  It actually already looks like an After, I didn't realize that's the Before shot....looks great!  I too like the chevron pattern (past its prime) so I say bring on the chevron!

  2. Its definitely in good shape as it is - just doesn't work with the color scheme I have.  Won't be too much trouble to change it.

Stefanie, I recently used this Suzani print fabric (in titan/birch) with some orange and LOVED the color combination. I love chevron, but it is so overused, So the suzani was my backup and I think I love it even more than the chevron! Plus the fabric is heavy and perfect for upholstery.

  5. This chair is beyond fabulous. I am thinking I definitely need a chippendale chair in my life.

  6. I don't even need to see an "after" to know that I'm going to LOVE it. What a great flea market find.

  8. I thought the picture of the chair was the "after" also. I think the fabric on it is cool!
Seeing the chevron next to the frame of the chair, it looks a little busy to me.  If you want to change the fabric, I would pick a solid or a very small print for the cushion.  Then the framework will stand out on it's own.
    You're welcome. :)

That will be a lovely combination. Looking forward to the "after" pics.

  10. I LOVE the fabric on it. I actually have a chair just like this but without handles ($7 at Goodwill). It has a vinyl seat, and I cannot figure out how to get it off and recover it. If I were you I'd add a texture near your paint color and have a trim pillow with chevron.

  11. $7? That is a score. I paid a lot more for this one but that is expected when shopping at bklyn flea. Sometimes convienence is worth it.

  12. Love that combo!  I didn't realize people hated chevron, well it's still going in my baby's room.  I love it!

I think the chevron looks good on a fabric, especially a small amount like a chair cushion, as opposed to a dresser front.  I also like the navy-cream combo. What is orange?

  17. I still have a thing for the Chevron pattern, too, popular opinion (or hatred, I guess) be damned. Such a cool find. I'm excited to see how it turns out!

  18. Ooh, navy and orange! Of course I love, love, love this - we have a navy striped carpet and an orange chair in the studio:

    Do it!

  19. That's a hell of a find you have there! It looks like it's in pristine condition too! I have a chair addiction and this almost makes me want to hunt down a bamboo chair. I can't wait to see the new look.

  20. You'd spend $40 on lunch with your pals, yes? Why not spend it on something you'll admire and use for years?

I say use what you love! I was looking at ikat fabric the other day and realized I don't like it. If it wasn't "in" than I would def hate it! It looks okay when used in the right setting but you won't find it in my house. Don't go with something thats a trend unless you really do love it. I ask myself do I like it or is it just because its "cool"?

Love these- still expensive but you could order half a yard- you certainly wouldn't need a whole yard just to recover a chair!

  23. Sorry to hear about your back.  That stinks.  I love spoonflower.  I couldn't find the fabric pattern/color combination I wanted for curtains in my bedroom, so I made the pattern I wanted.  I haven't made the curtains yet but will soon.  When I was looking for the pattern I wanted, I found things that were sort of close but the fabric was soooooooo expensive that $40 dollars looked like pocket change.  I can't wait to see what you choose!

You know the nice thing about a clean bold pattern is it's classic. It may draw yawns periodically but it will never go out of style.

Case in point: basic black and pearls.

I don't think I'll EVER get over chevron.  However, I haven't added chevron to my house yet (I think I can't decide what and where), so maybe after that I won't be SOOOOOO in love with it.  That chair is to.die.for.

I might be telling you of a site that you already know about, but check out Fabricguru.com.  They buy overstocks and they usually always have really great prices and their shipping is flat rate...which is awesome!

  27. I think that great chair is calling out for a floral or soft abstract print. The chevron fabric clashes a bit too much with the geometric lines of the frame. But anyway you go, I'm sure it's going to be stunning!

Oh my word! The before was amzing, but the after will totally ROCK in the shore bedroom! I would love to know what you're going to do with the previous fabric on the seat.  I wonder where I can find it?!
