ReplyDeleteYes, Return to Oz is more my jam but I figure so few people would recognize it I went a little more whimsical. Ive never read the books but evidently it can be quite dark.

ReplyDeleteThere isn't any scaring to do on Halloween. My block gets more than 1000 trick or treaters (at least thats how many we get before I run out of candy) so we are pretty much on the stoop the whole time. And to be clear they were coming way before we moved here so the crowd isn't coming for us.
ReplyDeleteI use those sticky sheets that mimic lamination without the machine. Otherwise they would just fall apart.

I love it! I think it's a great theme, I have a friend who dresses up as the Wicked Witch and then has her pugs dressed as flying monkies.

ReplyDeleteActually Ive had this idea for a few years already - I was originally thinking zombie wizard of oz. But then I grew kind of tired of the whole zombie thing and I just went with a slightly darker version of the original.
My husband takes care of storage as well. We don't keep everything either - if I dont think Ill use something again, I trash it. Even with being pretty careful about what I keep, we still end up with lots of bins.

ReplyDeleteAnyone who Ive spoken to seems to be into it although I imagine the ones that don't like it dont say much. I dont see why anyone would think it was sketchy but I dont really care too much. I one of those people who judge the neighbors who dont decorate so I guess we'd be even :)

I'd love to see other people's ideas for holiday storage...but mostly yours (what you keep of it at least)! Great decor this year. Always look forward to the reveal.

ReplyDeleteNot much to show you. We use those plastic bins for what we do keep (we have very little storage space so we are very critical about what we do keep). On Nov 1, everything gets thrown into the bins and we sort out the mess the following year. I don't have a good system at all.
ReplyDeleteI usually buy one or two new items each year and of course I DIY a few items each year as well. Where it makes sense, I'll reuse certain items (for example, the blow mold skeletons were used in year 2, 3 and 4). Yes, we literally have a closet full of skeletons! Other than that, we start from scratch. Making what I can myself keeps the cost to a reasonable amount, at least in my own mind. (Obviously not doing anything is the cheapest option but that isnt my bag)

ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, that makes me want to scrap my Boston Terrier's "rufferee" (instead of referee) costume and make him a flying monkey instead with me as the wicked witch. Wonder if I could convince my husband to be something as well...
ReplyDeleteWell you completely knocked it out of the park again. Unbelievable. I love the idea of doing darker take on things that are not that scary to begin with. I had thught of doing a dark fairy tale theme at my house one year. Although I guess it could be argued that those monkeys are pretty damn scary along with the witch. I love the Wizard of Oz. Have you ever read any of the books in the Wicked series? Pretty dark and very interesting. You should give them a shot. I love the wanted signs and all the specific little details. Fantastic. Also, if you are throwing stuff away after you use it, give me a call and I will pay for the shipping to send it to me. :) I am always looking for more Halloween junk to store in my too small storage spaces.

I hadn't really started decorating and was feeling overwhelmed this year, then I saw your decorations, and was inspired. I had started a Bird theme, like you had done with the skeletons. Year after year, my neighbor across the street has done up her house as the Emerald City. I've always wanted to piggy back on that with the Haunted Forest but with two little kids and a busy spot on the PTA, I haven't had the time or energy to think about it. Next year is THE year! Couple of questions . . . what kind of sticky paper do you mean when you answered about the flyers? Also, did you just free hand the monkeys before cutting them out or did you have a template?
