Yea, the Halloween exterior decorations are up so I can finally show you this years theme. Its a slightly darker take on an old classic, The Wizard of Oz. I call my version Wicked of Oz :)
Love Halloween as much as I do? Check out the spooky decor of Halloweens past:
Welcome to the Asylum (2011) Freak Show (2010) Eek! (2009) Infested (2008)
The invites are in the mail on their way to our short list of guests. I'll be sharing those soon.
You are so creative. LOVE the theme this year!!
ReplyDeleteFantastic.
ReplyDeleteThis is AMAZING! The Wizard of Oz is one of my favorite movies and this is such a great interpretation for Halloween. Really great job!!!
ReplyDeleteAmazing! You have the best Halloween decor, and I look forward to it every year! I think my favorite detail is the yellow bricks, and of course the crazy writing on the doors. Love it!
ReplyDeleteLOVE. I've always thought The Wizard of Oz was much spookier than many think. Have you ever seen Return to Oz? Horrifying.
ReplyDeleteThis is so so cool. I would love it if people in my neighborhood got this into the holidays.
This looks awesome! Can I ask if you made the flying monkeys?
ReplyDeleteI am not a Halloween Decorator- but your decorations are great!
ReplyDeleteSeriously?! Those flying monkeys are fantastic!!
ReplyDeleteYes, Return to Oz is more my jam but I figure so few people would recognize it I went a little more whimsical. Ive never read the books but evidently it can be quite dark.
ReplyDeleteYes, I made them using a jigsaw and sheets of wood. I used the same technique as I used for this project: http://www.brooklynlimestone.com/2009/07/cheap-and-chic-silhouette-art-step-by.html
ReplyDeleteLove your missing ads...Did you laminate them to make them waterproof?
ReplyDeleteYou must have more hours in your day than the rest of us. Where do you find the time to make these intricate and creative creations?
ReplyDeleteI wish you were my neighbor! Love it!
ReplyDeleteThis is FANTASTIC!!! I love Wizard of Oz! It's not overly done, it's simple and yet amazing! Sorry for the exclamations, but I LUV IT!
ReplyDeleteAmazing. Love the little details like the pile of yellow bricks. I hope they put you in the paper again this year!!
ReplyDeleteAmazing! Can you come decorate my house for Halloween? Love the Wizard of Oz spin :-)
ReplyDeleteOh my--that is FABULOUS!
ReplyDeleteYour home looks AMAZING! If i was a kid i'd totally, actually FOR SURE stop by to trick or treat! Are you/your hubby planning to "scare" kids when they come by?
ReplyDeleteThere isn't any scaring to do on Halloween. My block gets more than 1000 trick or treaters (at least thats how many we get before I run out of candy) so we are pretty much on the stoop the whole time. And to be clear they were coming way before we moved here so the crowd isn't coming for us.
ReplyDeleteI use those sticky sheets that mimic lamination without the machine. Otherwise they would just fall apart.
ReplyDeleteLove it! I look forward to your Halloween posts each year.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't started decorating yet, and need to get our act in gear as our party is a mere 11 days away! Eek!
I love it! I think it's a great theme, I have a friend who dresses up as the Wicked Witch and then has her pugs dressed as flying monkies.
ReplyDeleteoh man, the flying monkies used to scare me so stinking bad, lol.
ReplyDeletelooking good! Halloween is the BEST!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh......wish I lived next door to you. The Wizard seems to be quite a popular theme this year but you've outdone all I've seen. Great presentation.
ReplyDeleteLOVE it! ;)
ReplyDeleteIt is perfection, of course! I look so forward to this post every year!!! LOVE the pile of yellow bricks, I think that's my favorite part.
ReplyDeleteSo awesome.
ReplyDeleteI wait for your Halloween post every year and you never disappoint! This is so great - love the flying monkeys. Can't wait to see your & Mr. L's costumes!
ReplyDeleteJust wonderful! I look forward to your Halloween post all year long and you never dissapoint! This is just fabulous.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like it but I don't think she does. She must be an A type personality for sure.
ReplyDeleteIt would be great to see how you pack up after Halloween. My husband is ready to be done with it November 1 and he tosses it all into tubs for me. Eeek. The following year I have a mess waiting for me.
ReplyDeleteAmazing (as always)! So clever. You were totally inspired by our family costumes last year, right? :-)
ReplyDeleteTerrific Theme. I love this year's decorations. Are you going to be dressing up as pregnant Dorothy?
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding me?! This is AWESOME! So creative. I'm also wildly impressed that you put this together while pregnant. The only thing I could put together while preggo was a sandwich. You go girl!
ReplyDeleteDude, Limestone.... Killer decorations. I love it! I might have to make a road trip to come trick or treating at your house.
ReplyDeleteDo your neighbors love what you do or are they a little sketched out? : )
ReplyDeleteIn fairness, the husband did all the heavy lifting and my brother was there to help as well. I come up with the ideas but I could have never finished it alone.
ReplyDeleteIll be a pregnant wicked witch although I have to make sure my costume still fits. It was plenty big a few months ago but Ive grown :)
ReplyDeleteOf course :)
ReplyDeleteActually Ive had this idea for a few years already - I was originally thinking zombie wizard of oz. But then I grew kind of tired of the whole zombie thing and I just went with a slightly darker version of the original.
My husband takes care of storage as well. We don't keep everything either - if I dont think Ill use something again, I trash it. Even with being pretty careful about what I keep, we still end up with lots of bins.
ReplyDeleteReally? I haven't seen anyone do a darker version of Wizard of Oz before but I'd love to see what other people have been done. Please share.
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome!
ReplyDeleteObsessed. Love the stray pile of yellow bricks (& everything else). I wish I had known to track you down when we still lived in Crooklyn instead of having to go to Staten Island for all of our holiday-decorating-peeping (yours is much more chic).
ReplyDeleteGahhh!!! Love it! Can't wait to see the invites - I always love what you come up with!! And of course the interior - can't wait!!
ReplyDeleteAnyone who Ive spoken to seems to be into it although I imagine the ones that don't like it dont say much. I dont see why anyone would think it was sketchy but I dont really care too much. I one of those people who judge the neighbors who dont decorate so I guess we'd be even :)
ReplyDeleteThis is seriously cool! Very impressive

I love your Halloween decor your the best at it!!! :) Can't wait until Martha features you in our magazine :)
ReplyDeleteOnce again you never seize to amaze me..love your Blog...
ReplyDeleteI just went back and looked at all your themes - absolutely amazing. But one question! I Noticed each year it's completely different - do you rent the decor (all the skeletons and people - the big stuff)? Or what do you do with it all?!
ReplyDeleteWow, Halloween is becoming popular here in Australia. It's something that was never a part of my childhood but my children love it. Thanks for the ideas!!!
ReplyDeleteHaving just looked back in your archives in my own party planning, I'm so excited to see your theme this year! It's my favorite yet! My sister and I watched Wizard of Oz so much that the original VHS is completely worn out. As always, I love the details you use, especially the bricks and the direction post. Can't wait to see the invites. I'm guessing a crystal ball is involved...

THis is FABULOUS! awesome. rocking it!
ReplyDeleteYou out-do yourself each year! LOVE IT!!
ReplyDeleteI also would love to see a blog about your storage for holidays. I have a large attic and still struggle with exactly how to store Holiday decorations. I'd love to see other people's ideas for holiday storage...but mostly yours (what you keep of it at least)! Great decor this year. Always look forward to the reveal.
ReplyDeleteYou never cease to amaze with your Halloween decor. Can't wait to see what you did inside!
ReplyDeleteI am not a fan of Halloween but I LOVE this. You and hubby must be blast to hang out with.
ReplyDeleteI really like the theme and what you've done. Its very clever.
ReplyDeleteNot much to show you. We use those plastic bins for what we do keep (we have very little storage space so we are very critical about what we do keep). On Nov 1, everything gets thrown into the bins and we sort out the mess the following year. I don't have a good system at all.
ReplyDeleteI usually buy one or two new items each year and of course I DIY a few items each year as well. Where it makes sense, I'll reuse certain items (for example, the blow mold skeletons were used in year 2, 3 and 4). Yes, we literally have a closet full of skeletons! Other than that, we start from scratch. Making what I can myself keeps the cost to a reasonable amount, at least in my own mind. (Obviously not doing anything is the cheapest option but that isnt my bag)
ReplyDeleteI doubt Ill ever grace the pages of Martha Stewart but I try to live up to her high Halloween standards :)
ReplyDeleteThis is absurdly awesome. You are so talented!
ReplyDeleteawesome!!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you posted links to years past--Last year was the first year I started following your blog, so I was anxiously awaiting this year's peek! Love it--great work as always!
ReplyDeletegreat job! best yet!
ReplyDeletedo you ever sell your printables on etsy? *hint* id totally pay for the missing posters...
You have the BEST Halloween decorations! I wish I lived near you so I could see it every day - talk about getting you in the mood for 10/31!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great!
ReplyDeleteI think this is my favorite of all of the themes you've done! Great job!! I love the yellow bricks. :)
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, that makes me want to scrap my Boston Terrier's "rufferee" (instead of referee) costume and make him a flying monkey instead with me as the wicked witch. Wonder if I could convince my husband to be something as well...
ReplyDeleteWell you completely knocked it out of the park again. Unbelievable. I love the idea of doing darker take on things that are not that scary to begin with. I had thught of doing a dark fairy tale theme at my house one year. Although I guess it could be argued that those monkeys are pretty damn scary along with the witch. I love the Wizard of Oz. Have you ever read any of the books in the Wicked series? Pretty dark and very interesting. You should give them a shot. I love the wanted signs and all the specific little details. Fantastic. Also, if you are throwing stuff away after you use it, give me a call and I will pay for the shipping to send it to me. :) I am always looking for more Halloween junk to store in my too small storage spaces.
ReplyDeleteOh my God that's AMAZING.
ReplyDeleteAnd this is the first time I see your house, which is also AMAZING.
This is all genius. Love. It. So. Much. Those monkeys are fantastic, but I really think my favorite part is the little wanted signs. So good Mrs. Limestone.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant blog. Definitely given me something to think about. Some interesting thoughts on the subject. Looking forward to see what else you post in the future.
ReplyDeleteI get so excited about your Halloween post. Great theme as always!
ReplyDeleteIll probably be getting rid of the signs and the monkeys but its not like I can just drop them in the mailbox. My guess is that its cheaper to make them yourself than to ship them.
ReplyDeleteDrop me a line - Im happy to send them to you.
ReplyDeleteThat is sooo cool! I live in Brooklyn and recently discovered your blog. I really would like to see the decor in person :)
ReplyDeleteSeriously best Halloween decorating everrrr!!! Turned out great!
ReplyDeleteOur neighborhood like yours gets hundreds of trick or treaters (must be the school next door). I hadn't really started decorating and was feeling overwhelmed this year, then I saw your decorations, and was inspired. I had started a Bird theme, like you had done with the skeletons. Off to the Dollar Store to finish up. Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteTrick or Treat. :) Deb. http://www.personalityispreferred.com
The architectural details of your home are just so beautiful....It always ties in so well with your Halloween decor. You did this concept perfectly!! :)
ReplyDeleteYour blog is AMAZING! It is my absolute favorite! Thank you so much for being such an inspiration!
ReplyDeletethepoorsophisticate.blogspot.com

ReplyDeleteAs much as I hate the Wizard of Oz ...
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your decorating .. especially the yellow bricks
can't I'll wait for my invitation (haha)
Thanks for sharing your ideas!
Why do you hate the Wizard of Oz? Just curious.
ReplyDeleteThis is ridiculously cool.
ReplyDeleteYou are so amazingly talented! I'd love if you would share your favorite resources for your decor or DIY tutorials. UH. MAZ. ING.
ReplyDeleteHi Janann - I share my favorite DIY and decor tutorials on the blog on a regular basis. Just do a search and you'll find a ton.
ReplyDeleteJust. Freakin. Awesome.
ReplyDeleteThis is my favorite one of your outdoor decorations! I love Wizard of Oz, it's such a classic. Glad you picked it!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Congrats on your Raven party feature too :-)
Mrs. Limestone, you are so talented! The care you put into every detail is really inspiring!! You could totally make a living as an event planner. You could be the most sought after party planner in NYC!!
ReplyDeleteGah! I love your theme for this year! I can't wait to read about more of the details!
ReplyDeleteOh no, will the storm destroy all that?
ReplyDeleteI've been excited to see what you've been up to this year. It looks fantastic, as always! We just hosted a costume party - thanks for being my inspiration! http://www.michellelunt.com/2012/10/our-halloween-costume-party.html
ReplyDeleteWarmly, Michelle

Looks like your friends really get into the spirit! Love that.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely fabulous...as always
ReplyDeleteHi Stefanie. I've been following your fabulous blog for some time now and I've gotten so much inspiration from it. I got really excited when I first saw this year's Halloween post. Year after year, my neighbor across the street has done up her house as the Emerald City. I've always wanted to piggy back on that with the Haunted Forest but with two little kids and a busy spot on the PTA, I haven't had the time or energy to think about it. Next year is THE year! Couple of questions . . . what kind of sticky paper do you mean when you answered about the flyers? Also, did you just free hand the monkeys before cutting them out or did you have a template? Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you!
ReplyDeleteStephanie
Any office supply should have sticky sheets that mimic lamination without a machine. Or you could just have them laminated.
ReplyDeleteI used a projector to trace the monkey silhouettes before cutting them out.
I must have missed last year's theme since I was on maternity leave! LOVE IT! What do you do with your bigger props once you are done? Store them? Toss? Give you a local theater? Since storage is always an issue, thought I would ask!
ReplyDeleteHow did you get your flying monkey silhouettes to stay in place? I absolutely love the Wicked theme!
ReplyDeleteAny chance you would share the printable for the 'Missing" signs? My husband and I are doing this theme for Halloween and I would love to have some of these signs hanging around. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI want to do the monkey silhouettes!! How did you anchor them to the side of your house?
ReplyDeleteWe use heavy duty fishing line for pretty much everything.
DeleteI love your Oz theme but I am curious about one of your designs. What was the idea behind the door that states Munchkin Mayor with an X? just curious... Thank you
ReplyDeleteWell it's pretty loose but the idea is that his house was destroyed and the X notes the building being condemned.
