I know we have a month left to go but I'm calling it. I give you my suggestion for the "it" home decor item of 2013. It's the Threshold Bar Cart from Target.
beautifully styled examples from chic geek / a house in the hills / style me pretty / a cozy boat
In the past few weeks, this bar cart has exploded on the blogger scene and its easy to see why. It's affordable, stylish and functional. I've seen it in person and it is pretty hard to resist. I'm not crazy about the plastic faux wood tray panels inside (mirror would have been so much better and more practical for drink spillage) but thats my only complaint. And yes, I'm dying to get my own but I really have no good place to put it so I've averted my eyes on every shopping trip.
So what do you think? Are you with me on this being the hottest decor item of the year? Do you have another item that tops it? Do you have this cart and have your own styling tips to share? Discuss!
ps: it should be noted I have not been paid or even asked to write about this - I just really dig it.
We have a brass bar cart but that Target one is pretty sweet! I like how everyone styled theirs - ours is actually covered in booze (haha). My husband is a bit of a scotch collector and he doesn't get why I would want to put some away to make the styling look better. Jeez. Men. :-)
ReplyDeleteWell there is only one way to solve that problem. Drink up!
DeleteVictoria Elizabeth Barnes did a great post on an old medical cart she refinished...I think she did put mirrors in hers.
ReplyDeleteI love this look, but am way too accident prone to have it in our home!
Yup - agree completely. I've considered buying it but I think I'm going to hold out until I can find something vintage. I've been telling myself that for a month so I didn't spend the money yet.
ReplyDeleteVintage is always better. The problem is that Ive never seen anything remotely as nice for less than $500 in NYC. The bar cart has been a hot item for years so its not so easy to score for cheap. I just can't imagine spending $500 on something and then having to rehab it, you know?
DeleteThis explains why I haven't been able to find one for the past 6 or so months ;-) I've wanted one, but I recently got a really cute 1940's piece that I'm remaking to work as a bar.
ReplyDeleteooooh - that sounds right up my alley. I want to see it!
DeleteI, too, love it. And want a reason to have it. But I have my grandparents old tea cart in the only space I'd put a new cart....so what, I trade in an antique tea cart, complete with wheels and fold-down leaves, for a plastic target cart??? My answer continues to be yes, but I'll resist!
ReplyDeleteWow! I hadn't seen this. I've been wanting a bar cart and telling myself I don't need it because they are always so expensive. This is a great looking one. Leave it to Target. They are always on trend. Love this thing. I wonder how hard it would be to replace the faux wood with mirror?
ReplyDeleteI was so happy to see it online and thought it was the one. I put in an order for store pickup but when I saw it in person, it looked cheap esp the faux wood tray. So I am still waiting for something vintage...come on Craigslist!
ReplyDeleteThere is another alternative by Primer Magazine. It is a DIY project that will cost about $40 and you'll have real wood at this price as well. Here is the link for pictures and how to make it:

....and now I have to have it for my upcoming holiday party. Maybe DIY a new top to prevent the faux wood from bubbling and peeling due to inevitable drink spillage....
ReplyDeleteI got one of the those. I paid $5 for it.
ReplyDeleteYes! Agreed!! I wanted one for years but was always scared away by the high price. I just posted mine styled for Thanksgiving here! :)

I was making my usual rounds to my local Salvation Army thriftstore when suddenly what I thought was a fantastic mid-century bar cart caught my eye. Lo and behold the Threshold/Target sticker was on it! As it turns out Target often donates slightly damaged goods to this Salvation Army. I passed it up, though it was marked $25.
ReplyDeleteright after i bought this cart i got online and saw your post. :) love this cart!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this! My husband and I have been on the lookout for a bar cabinet but now I'm trying to convince him we should buy this bar cart instead - takes up much less visual space and is so much less expensive. Plus, I love the way it looks!
ReplyDeleteI just saw this piece a couple of weeks ago and loved seeing how everyone used it here. I saw a cart that I lovvveeed at the Asbury Park town wide sale this summer but it was $60 and I just couldn't see spending that at a yard sale. After reading this post, I am kind of pining for it (I still have a picture on my phone so I can swoon on demand, lol.)
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree! Having a bar cart is a great idea. It is a great way to add chicness in any home. Thanks a lot for sharing this information.
