I think Im going to use some chalkboard/magnetic paint to create a little message area on the inside of my dining room pantry door.
Ever since chalkboard paint became easily accessible Ive wanted to put it to good use but I've never had an opportune space until now. But it got me to thinking - is the chalkboard paint thing over? It seems very practical and fun at the same time but will I actually use it once its finished?
Love to hear everyones opinions.
Until then, here are some of the inspirational photos Ive found on the net.
I think if it's on the inside of your pantry and you think you'd actually use it (ya know for grocery lists, etc.), go for it...who cares if it's passe'. It's on the inside of your pantry so y'all will be the only ones who see it.

ReplyDeleteI don't really care if its passe or not for the reasons you mentioned. Just wondering what you design blog mavens thought about the trend in general.
ReplyDelete(Im also curious to know from the people that have chalk walls if they actually use it)
I still haven't built mine that I posted about a while ago on my blog. I will definitely use mine! I think it will entertain my daycare kids(they can draw on it), plus it will be a great spot to keep track of my daycare lunch menu, grocery lists, and notes/messages from the phone.
ReplyDeleteI say, if you like it..do it! It doesn't have to be a trendy item to look great and be functional.
I don’t think its passé. In fact, I don’t think it has quite yet hit its peak. I love the look personally and have incorporated a chalkboard into my new kitchen reno design. I wouldn’t go with a whole wall of chalkboard paint, but usage in a small contained area like your pantry door is a nice idea.
ReplyDeleteSuper practical. I would incorperate it into our reno if possible. Sometimes cool decor ideas seem to be everywhere on the decor blogosphere but its not everywhere else. Also if you like it- do it. Smiles, LC
ReplyDeleteI love it , I have the door I turned into a chalk board and a cupboard door interior that is chalkboard paint as well I love them wouldn't have a kitchen without them now , I have used it twice today infact, as well I love the look. Go fo it .I don't have magnetic but I just love having a chalk board period , I love the look.
ReplyDeleteI think it's cool as long as you use it for grocery lists, recipes, phone numbers, but not so much if you use it for inspirational quotes and daily bible verses. Or writing "Live, Laugh, Love". I hate that.
ReplyDeletelove the chalkboard door... thought about doing that... too messy... went with etched (or is it skree) glass pantry door... hmmm ... still love the chalk, but in someone else's kitchen I like it better! ;)
ReplyDeleteNo! It's not overdone... I love the idea. But of course I have a chalkboard in my kitchen, so I'm probably biased.
ReplyDeletesomeday we will paint the wall in our kitchen with chalkboard paint. and i will use it to keep track of grocery lists (instead of taping a piece of paper to the fridge), leave notes for alan where he will actually see them (big, colorful chalk!) and generally make my kitchen a very pleasant and fun place to be. and if it's passe, so is the keep calm and carry on poster, antlers as modern art and all the other crap that everyone loves but gets played out but still shows up on design blogs because it's just too great to ignore.
ReplyDeleteWe painted all the doors in our kitchen with chalkboard paint. It gets used because I have little kids and I'm glad I did it because we had ugly cheap plain flat doors and at least now they look intentional - but before you do it, consider the mess. My house is going to be messy no matter what I do (kids) - but yours is awesome and I live vicariously through you: I don't want chalk dust in my dream home :)
ReplyDeleteAlso - for those who write grocery lists on chalkboard walls: how do you remember what you need when you get to the store? I have a pad of paper hung inside a kitchen cabinet and I tear off the list and take it with me...
love the idea. Once I have kids, I would love to have a chalkboard wall or something. Thumbs up from me.
ReplyDeleteWell, I don't have any kids. Its more for me to play on :)
ReplyDeleteI dont ever take lists to the grocery store. I plan on using it more of a message center and making notes to myself really. But if I really need to take the list with me, Ill just snap a photo of it with my camera phone.
I love chalkboard walls. I plan on having one in my office AND pantry area. More than just for myself, I think it will be a fun way for my friends and family, most of whom are arstists, to interact with my house. Though, I'm sure I'll end up with incredibly obscene things that won't quite erase all the way.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I just found your blog a few weeks ago and it has been so inspiring to me through my own home remodel.

I don't think chalkboard paint ever goes "out of style". But I do find chalk boards rather messy. I had one once and there was always chalk dust everywhere beneath that I was wiping up.
ReplyDelete:)
We have it on the door in the playroom and the kids LOVE it.
ReplyDeleteDo it! You will never regret it!! I use mine all the time...it is the only way I ever remember anything anymore!!
ReplyDeleteI love chalkboard walls...I think thay are fun and you can also draw some artsy image if you are so inclined (and talented).
I don't think you are capable of making a mistep anyway...
I have a crap refrigerator in my kitchen, maybe I can paint that.
ReplyDeleteLove this idea!

I think its a great idea!! I am putting one in my back door entrance, I found an old frame ( you know the ones that have beautiful carvings on them) and I painted it antique white and put the chalk board in it...It is next to my new stainless steal fridge/freezer..The contrast between the two looks great...now I'm waiting to hang it...when the plastering is complete...

ReplyDeleteSorry - I'm going to have to be one of the lone voices of dissent on this. I think it's because we had a chalkboard wall at my old workplace and it just got filled with inane stuff that looked messy and caused lots of dust and without fail got all over our dark clothes.
ReplyDeleteLate to the party...but we have a pocket door to the library, and a whole wall into the kitchen done in chalkboard. The pocket door has an amazing piece of art one of my oldests friends did..no one wants to touch it or move it. The wall is purely for numbers and notes to each other as we come and go. I love it. And I don't even like the feel of chalk.!! Go figure!
