If you recall, I had a few front runners for the bedroom chair. Your comments convinced me going with a solid versus a print was the way to go. So that narrowed it down to three choices - the Ikea, the Target or the JcPenney.
When a sale came round, I took the plunge and got the Target slipper.
I'm sure you already know I'm a huge fan of Target. Design to the masses as a reasonable price. What could be better? I really do love that store and go into a semi trance when I enter its hallowed halls. Unfortunately, this was a web only item so I had to go on faith. I googled it before ordering but found almost no third party reviews so I took a gamble.
I don't often do detailed review posts here but since there were none out there I think it might be helpful for those looking for more info so here is my take on the chair.
Let's start with the good stuff.
It arrived very quickly. Much more quickly than promised by Target.com. Once it was out of the box and layers of wrapping, it was very easy to assemble. Stick part a into part b, a few nuts and bolts and twist ands turns later and it was done. Really like not like having spend hours putting something together. And overall, it looks pretty good. I think the photograph is a very fair representation of the item. The material is exactly what I expected it to be in terms of quality, etc. Its stylish without being too trendy - exactly what I wanted. And lastly, it doesn't scream "I'm from a discount chain!!".
And now onto the not so good stuff.
After I posted I had ordered it, Nikinikinine commented that the chair was really small. That made me worried but part of me thought to myself 'that might be good because I don't have a lot of room in there'. Well, she was 1000% correct in her description that its surprisingly wee. Like really short. The overall measurements are included in the description but the seat height is not so its somewhat misleading. If I had known just how low to the ground it was going to be, I would not have ordered it. Particularily with a high bed, it doesn't look quite right to me. Not completely crazy somehow off.
Another note on quality, the finishing is very raw. I didn't expect high quality work here but I also didn't expect there to be a tear in the fabric or staples showing. Its not terrible b/c the tear and the staples are only on the undersides and where the back and seat meet. Still, this is pretty poor workmanship. Affordable shouldn't mean cheaply made! And really, at $250, its not exactly free!
And lastly I'm a bit dissapointed in the pillow. I like the pattern - the problem is the colors. While the chair fabric is a stark white, the pillow fabric is black on off white. I know, its a minor thing but again, there is really no reason for it. Use a black on white pattern OR make the chair fabric slighly off white. Just because I'm cheap, doesn't mean I'm blind. Again, not a big deal, the pillow can be changed but its all these little things that add up to feeling its just not worth it.
With the exception of the height, I would have been pretty pleased with how it looks. So I don't think I'll return it for its short stature alone. It might not live in the bedroom for the long haul though, I'm still thinking that one over. Overall, I'm feeling a bit let down by the purchase so I can't whole heartedly recommend it. This might be the first time I've felt that way with a Target purchase. I guess the honeymoon is over.
In other news, I just ordered the canvas prints I planned to put over the chair. They should be ready in the next week or two. You can bet I'll be posting about those when they arrive.
Oh, I totally had an "I know it's short but WOW it's really short!" moment with a pair of end tables I just ordered from Overstock.com. I feel your (short) pain.
ReplyDeleteI have to say, the chair's a keeper. I remember the canvases from your mock-up being pretty large so I think you'll be able to pull them down the wall a hair to make the scale totally work.
I too have an ongoing affair with Target, what a shame you have been let down! In the photo it looks great, but I hear you on the height issue! With a high bed it must appear as it if were made for a child. (Know any children who need a chic looking chair for their room?)Good luck deciding whether to return it! Janell
ReplyDeleteI don't know how the chair legs are attached, but you can easily try to replace them with something that will put the chair in proper proportion to the rest of the furniture in your room. I know there are table legs at Home Depot (not sure about chair legs) but there are also vast resources available online as well. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the review Mrs. Limestone! I was going to buy it based on your photo, but now I am wavering.
ReplyDeleteAm I just really really cheap because I'm not sure $250 is that cheap for a chair. That being said, it is a really really nice chair, but I'm just thinking to myself whether I'm extremely cheap since it's almost a consensus that this is a steal at that price? And here I am still debating to spend $40 on a similar chair found on Craiglist. hmmm...maybe I should snatch it up.
ReplyDeleteI love the chair but I'm only looking at a picture. I'm sorry to hear that you feel let down by the purchase, unfortunately when it comes to purchasing things online you just never know. Like newbmome said try and see if you can replace the legs. Also, I don't know how high your ceilings are but I know that makes a big difference as well. I'm sure it will turn out just lovely.
ReplyDeleteeven though i know the ikea chair is the one that EVERYONE on a budget has, i still find it very cute and adorable. i just need to find a place to put one so i can get it.
ReplyDeleteI've just found your blog.....just lovely.
ReplyDeleteI will spend the next hour or so catching up!
where are you ordering the pictures from?
ReplyDeletei hate the chair is to small. its cute..but i was hoping you would be 1000% happy.
Can you get new legs for the chair?
ReplyDeleteI think it looks good, at least from the pictures I like it alot- good choice!
maybe you can find taller legs? it looks good from the photos but does look short. good luck!
ReplyDeleteSecond the option for taller legs if that is possible. Otherwise it does look a bit squatty. Boo. : (
ReplyDeleteGreat chair review. I love following your blog! :)
ReplyDeleteI want to see a "Wing Back" chair re-upholstered in a lovely fun fabric-
ReplyDeletewith studs. The chair is nice, but too low and a little to hotel-ish for me.
I like big comfy chairs..where you want to curl up and read a book.
What does cat think?
Thank you for the review. I've been considering purchasing a slipper chair from Target, but was unsure of making the purchase without first seeing or hearing someone's opinion of the chair. While Targets chairs are very cute, I now know they are a bit small for what I need. Thanks for your help!
ReplyDeleteWas it listed as a slipper chair? Those are always short. I guess I'm too cheap because I think $250's alot. Then again I know in NY prices are always more.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck on finding a solution, which I KNOW you will.
I like the overall look of the chair and I agree with Kelly - maybe you can get new legs that will raise the chair up a little higher. There are lots of online sources for replacement legs for sofas, chairs, tables, etc.
ReplyDeleteNew legs are a great idea! What about some antique casters (although they won't raise the chair up all that much will they)? Regardless it looks beautiful and so will the addition of your pictures. I can't wait to see it come together!
ReplyDeleteIt does give the master an Alice in Wonderland feel but would look great in a child's room.
ReplyDeleteI hate the chair wasn't all that you were hoping for. Shopping on-line always makes me nervous. I still do it, but still always get nervous. Thanks for doing such an honest review of the chair, it's one of the items I've been considering.
ReplyDeleteAwww, Limestone! I'm sorry. I had hoped that because it was going to be across the room from your bed it would still work. Those chairs have quite the Alice in Wonderland effect no?
ReplyDeleteI ordered one of the patterned slipper chairs and was able to return it in store (you may be able to do that too). By saying that the chair was "not as described" and explaining that the seat height wasn't given making the profile seem much larger, Target even refunded my shipping costs. HTH!
Thanks for the review. I am coveting those slipper chairs ;)
ReplyDeleteIt's a nice looking chair, but I totally feel you on the short thing. Once you get your canvases in there, you will be better able to judge if the chair is going to work I think. Thanks for the review though, it helps!

I'm thinking you should add taller legs. And the pillow thing would bother me, why in the world wouldn't they keep the same white?
ReplyDeleteAww, sorry Mrs. L! It is a gorgeous chair and it definitely looks taller on the website! ITA! I think you can return it to the brick & mortar store!
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry! I completely agree with all your gripes. Target usually has decent customer service, so hopefully you can return it (if you want to start the search all over again!). It's always so disappointing when things don't work out the way you envision.
ReplyDeleteThanks for everyones comments. New legs might be an option although I'm not sure if I can buy the kind of legs that would screw in off the shelf. I'll have to look into it. Brass casters would also be a nice way to add a little sparkle too.
ReplyDeleteIts small but it will due for now. I'm hoping once the art is in place, it will look a more put together as a vignette rather than just this tiny chair floating around. Having high ceilings doesn't help.
Lynzz - $250 isn't free but for a new upholstered chair, its on the cheaper side. Used furniture is obviously cheaper but reupholstering costs a fortune. Plus I have a fear of bed bugs which are a problem in used furniture.
Tamstyles - I'm ordering the canvases from uprinting.com. They should arrive soon so I'm very excited to see how they turned out.
I have to say I'm surprised by your reaction to your new chair. I recently purchased two of the Canary Print Armless Chairs in Robins Egg Blue from Target.com and ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM! I had read before ordering that it was unusually short and was suprised when it arrived that it was exactly as a slipper chair should be! Even my husband sits in it comforably. I thought $540 (also bought during a sale) for two chairs was an amazing price. Maybe the awesome print I picked distracts from the poor craftsmanship whereas your white only showcases. Sorry to hear you don't love it.
ReplyDeleteIt looks really good in the picture but I'm sorry you're not thrilled. I understand.
ReplyDeleteCan you add some cool casters to the bottom to elevate it a bit?
ReplyDeleteI know this is an incredibly old post, but if you take a look at the link in your very own post (look in the address bar after you click it), the word "children" does appear in it.
ReplyDeleteTarget has the Avington Slipper Chair in different (not white/black) that appears larger.
Just a thought. :)
I've been debating on this chair myself! Would you mind sharing the measurement of the seat height? I didn't see it noted in the comments above. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteYes, seat height please! I also noticed in the Target reviews that the $169 Avingdale Slipper Chair has a weight limit of 200 lbs. Do you know of a weight limit for your slipper chair? I mean, I'd like to know my husband can lounge in it without breaking it haha!!
