Deck Check

Note to self - do not schedule deck building in the middle of wettest weather ever! Thankfully our contractors aren't afraid of a little water and spent a good deal of time under a big plastic tarp but it still took a bit longer than expected.

Here is the progress we had in the first week.
DeckFirstWeek

For those outside of the area, don't be alarmed by my postage stamp sized backyard. This is pretty standard around here. The deck is off the second story as our part of the house starts on the second floor (the garden level is where we moved our in-laws into. Up until now we had to go through our in laws apartment to get to our backyard. This deck will give us a little private area as well as direct access to the backyard for us and kitty.

Trust me, the cat is very pleased about this.

More to come. Until then, happy Fourth of July!

  3. Glad I just saw this. Im in the process of also building my deck in my similar size/shape backyard (16x30)

I'll have pictures shortly, but good choice on the 45 degree decking, we did the same except the other way.

  4. Oh, very exciting. Not sure if your cat is allowed to prowl the neighborhood (I assume you don't let him out the front door!), but my cat made an escape off my 2nd story balcony in my last apartment. I was shocked the he jumped down 15 ft and ran up the street (terrified).

    Keep an eye on kitty.

    Love the deck!!

  9. I just read your comments about my living room over at Rate My Space. I wanted to come by your blog to say thanks, and to give you some info on the coffee table you asked me about.

I don't know the name of the table, but it's a Martha Stewart piece. I bought in November 2007, so I don't know if it's still part of her furniture collection. You could check out her web site to see if there's any info there. If not, maybe try Googling "Martha Stewart glass top coffee table" or something like that. I've seen the table at DeBoers here in Canada. If you have that store in NYC, it might be worth checking out. Again, it was about a year and a half ago that I saw it there, but you never know....

We're getting a lot of rain up here too :-( Hope the rain doesn't slow down your deck progress too much!!

  15. I, too, am surprised at what a nice size your yard is! That deck is going to double your space...and I can just picture you out there now, with a glass of wine, overlooking your pretty garden. You must be so excited to see it complete!

  17. Postage-stamp sized yards can be a good thing (minus the nosy neighbours) -- your $ goes a lot further, for one! It forces you to become creative with your space and determine what's high up on your list of important things.

(And I love the choice to do the decking diagonally! Very nice!)
