Commenters kickymarcia and Naz reminded me that I never posted the finished kitchen photos. I guess I was so tickled about it being featured in La Dolce Vita, I completely forgot to post them here. Never one to look a gift post in the mouth, here you go!
Lets start off with a refresher of what this space looked like when we purchased the house in 2007.
It was originally a small bedroom. We blew out the wall to make a joint kitchen/dining room space.
A little under 2 months into the renovation got underway (after new electrical, plumbing, windows, etc..), this is what the space looked like.
Because of various damage and a fairly thick wall that wasn't there anymore, the existing floors didn't work. Instead of trying to match the parquet in the dining room (which rarely works in my opinion) we decided to differentiate the space with a floor in a different pattern in an extension of the hallway plank flooring. It was NOT EASY to get this done - required loads of back and forth to make sure the right depth of wood was used so the transitions were seamless. But in the end, I just love how it turned out.
After plenty of lead time, the cabinets finally arrived and the lighting got installed.
At long last, the tiles we had salvaged from the upstairs bathroom got installed as backsplash and my long lusted after soapstone was in place. Fixtures and appliances made it complete. At least from a renovation prospective.
We moved in and got settled. Our kitchen looked like this
Not bad but you'll notice the upper glass cabinets are empty and the two stools was only a stop gap.
Finally, after nearly 2 years of living here, we put our butt in gear and got it finished (for now!). Take a peak. And yes, I got flowers just for your visit.
If you're still awake and want to see more of the kitchen renovation, take a look at my kitchen flickr set play by play.
That is a remarkable job on the flooring...and love the cabinets reaching to the ceiling with the glass doors at the top. Wonderful all around, enjoy! Janell
ReplyDeleteVery nice! I'm looking at a kitchen remodel in the next few years and I am so inspired by yours!
ReplyDeleteThat transformation was amazing. But a lot of work. I love looking at before and afters. You are making me want a white kitchen.
ReplyDeleteit looks fantastic! so classic and will definitely not 'date' in a few years. i love it.
ReplyDeletethe space wasn't dark before the turquoise touches but it's amazing how the addition of the turquoise in the stools behind the cabinets etc. really brighten the space and make it feel so...fresh.
kudos!
Looks great!! How wide is the clearance around the island?
ReplyDeleteOur kitchen is currently a walk-through from hall to back door. We're starting to perk on reno ideas. Do we move the back door, make the island a peninsula, keep the island, loose the island, make the island bigger.... you get the idea.
Again, awesome job!
Absolutely dreamy!! I'm in love with it! Thanks for sharing all the pics!
ReplyDeleteabsolutely beautiful I love it! I lust after your soapstone and that faucet...gasp!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a beautiful transformation. It must be so satisfying that all of the hard work that you put into it has resulted in this awesome kitchen. Love it!
ReplyDeletelove it! any chance you can let us know how the counters are holding up? i really want soap stone when we (eventually) do our kitchen remodel but i've heard mixed reviews...
ReplyDeleteGorgeous. What an amazing kitchen. Love all the colors and love all the light.
ReplyDeleteThat space just makes me happy. It's so so so beautiful. I can imagine myself cooking something delicious in there. :) Great job...it's an amazing transformation!
ReplyDeleteAmazing! The floors, the sink faucet, your stools, the countertops....love your taste!
ReplyDeleteYour kitchen is stunningly gorgeous! Everything you did is preciously perfect, Makes me wonder why you haven’t transitioned into the world of interior designer. From your ideas to your end results, you have a real talent for this.
ReplyDeleteDid I mention that I’m green with envy over most everything you do? ;) Oh, and that faucet makes me drool.
Wow!! That floor is AMAZING, and the cabinets are to die for. What a fantastic job!
ReplyDeleteMy ALL TIME FAVORITE kitchen! I absolutely love everything about it. I've commented on it before and will evermore. Love, love, love it!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely exquisite! Love the tiles at the bottom of the sink. I want your kitchen! You should be proud of your work.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your kitchen, and the floor is just beautiful. We're looking at a kitchen remodel in few years, and I'm going to steal a lot of your ideas. By the way, I love the pop of color from the stools - they look fantastic!

ReplyDeleteYour kitchen is making me purr.
ReplyDeleteForever one of my favorite kitchen's , creamy neutral and classically beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI love the new feature's.
Chris
Absolutely great!! The floor was worth the heartache it is the best feature.
ReplyDeleteWhat is going on with the air duct grill? Did you take it down or paint it black? It is one of those horrible "what should I do to make it look better things" so I look at everybody's to see if they have a better idea. MB
OMG! I'm in LOVE with the kitchen! I want to move in there... like right now. It's beautiful... I'm so jealous and now have no desire to go home to my kitchen (sad face). I'm keeping these pics on file so I can hopefully copy the light and classic feeling some day. LOVE IT!!!!
ReplyDeleteJaw dropping gorgeous. I love every detail!
ReplyDeleteabsolutely gorgeous! i love the cabinets, the pulls, the stools at the island...everything! great job!
ReplyDeleteOh how jealous I am!! I hate using that term, but if I'm going to be honest.... :)

I'm a first-time reader and commenter (followed you via Paloma!) Your home is absolutely stunning! As someone who has gutted/remodeled a kitchen in an older home, I know the sense of pride you must have at the gorgeous results!
ReplyDeleteI've probably missed detail info in a previous post, but can you tell me where you found the metal stools, and your oh-so-fab soap bottle? I'm a details junkie!

ReplyDeletelong time read - first time comment :) I love your kitchen it was featured on a blog somewhere else and it's how I came to be a reader.... the metal stools - love them... however question - what do you have on the feet to keep your wood floors safe? I have a set of metal chairs I would love to have in my kitchen but can't seem to find anything to cover them in order to save my floors.
ReplyDeleteWow, just beautiful! I love the blue accents and the stools look perfect. I am surprised by their color. I thought they looked quite a bit brighter when you posted about painting them. Great job!

ReplyDelete:-)
I have just finished reading about your reno from start to finish after discovering your blog a few weeks ago. Your journey has been such an inspiration. I actually would have finished reading last week but a few of your posts inspired me so much that I started my own projects and haven't read my usual blogs all week. Your kitchen looks fantastic and your writing style is really entertaining. Thank you for sharing. xx
ReplyDeleteI am stealing your kitchen layout. I love it.
ReplyDeleteCan you come hold my hand or help me color my hair whilst I live through it!

What a GORGEOUS kitchen! I really love the pop of blue in there!
ReplyDeleteGreat job, as always!
jenny
I am still so in love with your kitchen! It shows so much thought put into its design. Love the lit glass upper cabinets, soapstone counters, and especially the bridge faucet. Impeccable tastes! And the pops of turquoise are super fun. :)
ReplyDeleteI have to say your kitchen is my all time fav! I am totally inspired!
ReplyDeleteJust found you via Lisa Porter on Twitter...love your blog, your kitchen is divine! Will add you to my roll to keep in touch!
ReplyDeleteBlessings...
Your kitchen is incredible!!! What a great transformation.. I am in love! :)
ReplyDeleteNow THAT'S a kitchen. Gorgeous but it looks totally useable, not just a showcase. Well done.
ReplyDeleteWonderful! Thanks for posting the finished photos. I have been lurking for a while and I came to the site because of the soapstone countertops. I decided to go for them, too (in my Chicago bungalow kitchen rehab). I am so glad I did, and thanks for your writing about the use of soapstone. Your kitchen and your whole house are gorgeous. You really have an eye.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your kitchen, LUCKY you to have such an amazing place in New York. That is one of my dreams!

Oooo baby oh baby kitchen envy!!!
ReplyDeleteLove what you did.
wow its absolutely stunning!
ReplyDeleteis there a built-in range-hood behind the microwave? if not does the microwave get hot when you cook on the stove-top?
i am confused...i thought the wood floors were just refinished in the house, no?
ReplyDeleteYour kitchen is out of this world!!! I had to mention you this morning on My Island Wedding!!!
ReplyDeleteI'll get you some pics of my silly living room soon! Thanks for offering your help!
-Kelley
Hi Zan - The microwave has a fan setting but I almost never turn it on. Not that I go around feeling the microwave while I cook but its not really an issue of it getting hot.
ReplyDeleteTam - The floor were refinished in the rest of my house but these floors had to be replaced.
Your kitchen is amazing! I love the color of the stools and how they really add a suttle amount of color to the room.
ReplyDeleteYour floor...be still my heart. Fantastic kitchen.
ReplyDeleteWe are about to put in soapstone countertops, and yours are just beautiful! I was glad to read your still-high opinion of them after you've lived with them awhile. Your kitchen is stunning!
ReplyDeleteI love your photography! You're a braver woman than I to undertake such a major renovation. Totally fab.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I now love your blog :) Glad I found you :)
ReplyDeleteWhat is the color of the walls and trim? It's such a beautiful warm white, without being sterile. I posted this question on apartment therapy as well. Please help. Beautiful blog by the way...
ReplyDeleteAdmiring your kitchen...what fabulous high ceilings you have!

I'm a little behind on your blog, but this kitchen reno is awesome! I love the way you did the top cabinets, such a great and practical idea! most clients I've worked with like glass front cabinets, but know they are not realistically going to be that neat:)
ReplyDeleteThe new flooring is amazing! Enjoy your kitchen remodel...
ReplyDeleteLove this kitchen and am currently building. My kitchen will use similar products - I've always loved soapstone! You have done it perfectly. I love your pendant lights as well. Do you have a source? It's a fantastic look!
ReplyDeletelove your kitchen! A trick we learned in our latest remodel ... we have the same wall of counter, range, counter, fridge. We made that section of counter 30" deep. It sits on 24" cabinets that are pulled away from the wall & we put 2x4's on the wall to support the counter. It also adds about 6" behind the range. It gives us about 2 sq ft more space, moves the clutter way back, without taking up the counter AND it brings the fridge almost out to counter depth!
ReplyDeleteI love your kitchen! It is just beautiful. I have a question for you. It looks like you have GE Cafe range and OTR Microwave. Do you have any problems with steam or heat on the micro key pad. We have the same model and it gets very hot and then the keypad dims until it cools down.
ReplyDeleteHello! I did a little feature on your gorgeous kitchen today! Hope you like it!
ReplyDeleteAny chance we could get the info on the cabinets?
ReplyDeleteI love this kitchen. You did an amazing job. I'm also loving the barstools. Do you mind sharing where you got them? Thanks

Can you tell me the color paint you used on your cabinets, walls, and trim? By the way, your kitchen is fabulous!!!
ReplyDeleteI Love the barstools. Can you tell me where you got them? Thanks! Your kitchen is so pretty! I am about to embark on a kitchen total redo to my farmhouse in Texas!!

ReplyDeleteI love the outcome! I'm working on a similar project and have been very pleased with hardware from www.lookintheattic.com
ReplyDeleteHighly recommend for quality, selections, and price!

ReplyDeleteYour kitchen is awesome ! Can you please tell me who made your cabinets ?
ReplyDeleteYour kitchen is beautiful! Now that it has been a few years, how is the soapstone wearing or not wearing? I would love to put soapstone also in our kitchen but am curious of the pros and cons from someone who has soapstone and has lived with it for a few years.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
Your kitchen is beautiful! I would really like to put soapstone in our kitchen but am curious of the pros and cons from someone's perspective that has soapstone and has lived with it for a while. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your kitchen! We are currently planning our kitchen/dining room remodel and the layout (and style) is very similar to yours. Would you be able to tell me the dimensions of your kitchen and island? Everything looks so similar to what we are thinking for our remodel and I'm hoping the size is somewhat the same. Also, would you mind telling me where you purchased your cabinets and light fixture over the island? Sorry for so many questions! I've been searching about 1 year for the perfect "inspiration" kitchen and this is the closest I have found!

ReplyDeleteI too want to know where you got your metal stools and fab soap bottle! You may respond back at mhcd2009@att.net, thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove your kitchen!
What is the brand of your stove?
ReplyDeleteThanks
Michelle
Hello! I've been reading your blog for years, thanks so much for all the advice and inspiration! I'm getting ready for a renovation, demo starts tomorrow! Soapstone is high on my list of countertop materials, may I ask how yours is holding up 8 years later? Also, who made your kitchen faucet? Thanks so much!
