As you may already have guessed, I'm a bit of a reality tv addict. Meet my new favorite reality tv star, Buddy Valastro.
I'm not a celebrity stalker or super fan. I've seen many a celebrity walk past me without much more than a second glance. Actors are just people. But Buddy isn't an actor and I would like to make a petition to him to adopt me. What do you say Valastros? If this helps at all, I'm a quarter Italian. I don't know anything about making cakes but I'm a fast leaner. I'm also really clumsy so please don't put me in charge of delivery. Thanks! I'll be patiently waiting by the phone now for my call.
No room in the family for a clutzy partial Italian who can't bake? So it's going to be like that? Ok, I get it. What about you make me a birthday cake as a consolation prize? A limestone cake would be a pretty cool addition to your portfolio, don't you think? What'da ya say? Deal?
If I don't hear back from Buddy soon, I think I'm just going to have to get over to Hoboken and stake out the bakery. Or at the very least stop by and buy a cookie in the hopes I just happen to non-chalently and coolly run into Buddy and pretend I've never seen the show while I have Mr Limestone furiously snapping photographs of us interacting. But really, I'm not a stalker.
He is the "star" of TLC's Cake Boss which is a show about a family that runs a bakery out of Hoboken, NJ. They make cool cakes but the show isn't entirely about that - its about the family and how they operate the bakery and deal with making these creations. I like it for a lot of reasons. One, I have a fascination with people who can do things I can't do but would like to. Two, it’s hilarious to me to watch this family interact with each other in a way that feels both real and vaguely familiar to me despite never having a big familgia. Three, its full of suspense as they have to transport these towering stacks of soft cake and cream to their final destinations. Four, none of the people on the show are hipsters or think they are cool which is what, in fact, makes them cool. What more could I ask for?

Anyone else watching this show?
I've never heard of the show, but this is awesome! Unbelievable talent!
ReplyDeleteMrs. L,
ReplyDeleteI was just in Hoboken yesterday (to get burgers from Johnny Rockets) and saw a bunch of people carrying HUGE boxes coming out of the bakery and loading them into someone's awaiting SUV. I was walking past admiring the beautiful signage. I had NO idea that they had a show about it!
I'll have to pop inside and see what's going on behind the beautiful sign.
I'd love to see them do a Limestone cake. That's be incredible.
Best- THL
my husband and I love this show!! We love the awesome cakes he creates, but also NJ/NY italianess - it reminds us of home and family.
ReplyDeleteI have heard of the show, but have yet to see it. The photos you posted are amazing! Their work is fantastic. I kind of hate people who are so creative that they can pull stuff like this off. :) It makes me so jealous. Thanks for sharing this! I am going to have to make sure to catch the show at least once.
ReplyDeleteLOVE that show!
ReplyDeleteI love this show!
ReplyDeleteI'm crazy about this show and love The Cake Boss!
ReplyDeleteLove the show and I'm just addicted as you. I love seeing him create all the cakes! It's so funny to see this big italian guy design delicate wedding cakes.
ReplyDeleteDid you see the one with the crazy bride that went nutty and put colored frosting all over a cake he had done for her? Nutty.
We must make a trip out there!!!
I have never seen the show either, but they are so cool! I'm getting married soon, and looking at these cakes just makes me dream up all kinds of stuff!
ReplyDeleteI also love that show. I think his cakes are amazing! They are quite a bit nicer looking to me than Duff's at Charm City Cakes. And you're right the way that the family interacts with one another is funny. Let me know if you get adopted I want to be your sister if you do.....:)
ReplyDeleteHi, just found your blog in the last few weeks! Just found Cake Boss the other night too and was blown away. I am just a run of the mill baker so I love Cake Challenge, Duff & Co at Charm City so I was tickled to find this show. The cakes are truly amazing. I always just wonder what they TASTE like. Ever get up east from down here in burning hot Texas, I will find out!!
ReplyDeleteWe LOVE LOVE LOVE this show! I am right there with you, I would love to learn this incredible art, but can only admire from afar! My 5 year old daughter who turns six on Aug 1st has asked for me to order a cake from "Buddy the Cake Boss"!! It was adorable! I tried to explain that New Jersey is really far away from Arizona...but that answer didn't suffice!
ReplyDeleteBTW I really admire Miss Limestone and her amazing knack for decorating....would you adopt me? (my family has to come with the deal though)*WINK WINK*
Is it safe to watch again? The live ducks had me very scared...
ReplyDeleteEvery time my teenager has this show on, I think I am not going to waste time watching it, and yet I am drawn into watching it - the whole thing! I like the family dynamics even more than the cake part. Our favorite episode is the one where some customer orders a cake for a bachelorette party. Buddy's mom (the REAL boss) objects to the cake that was ordered. She is stalking around yelling "no sexy cakes!". Awesome
ReplyDeleteThat's my local bakery! I pass it every day on my way to the train. And I've got to say...there's not a whole lot of exaggeration on the show (sadly, or wonderfully...depending on how you look at it. :-)
ReplyDeleteI love this show too, its totally addicting! My favorite one was with that awful bride, know the one I am talking about? As Buddy took out her finished cake she goes "omg its so ugly" From there on I was dying laughing as I wanted to punch her out. What a great show!
ReplyDeleteI love this show too! It always makes me hungry though. And yes, they are hilarious!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this show for so many reasons...it's an authentic, NJ, Italian bakery for starters. When I moved to Virginia and asked someone if there was an Italian bakery in town, they looked at me like I had three heads.
ReplyDeleteBy "authentic bakery", I mean that they don't just make cakes. They have all the pastries and cookies you'd expect from a real bakery. Yum!
Lastly, and I'm not trying to say what Duff does isn't impressive, but Buddy's staff makes cakes that are 100% cake. When I watch Duff on Food Network, I cringe as they cut wood and metal for the cakes. All this in the same room as all that icing. Ick!
Hilarious! The shower cake is so cute! The shower cake reminds me of an old co-worker who announced her pregnancy to her DH by baking him a cake and placing the used pregnancy test on top of it! Ewww!
ReplyDeletehahaha I love it too! Did you see the one where he made the "prehistoric mammal"? That was seriously amazing!
ReplyDeleteLove the show. My husband will "let" me watch it with him. It is my only reality show he will "let" me watch with him in the room.
ReplyDeleteWhat a crazy show - it sounds like total fun. I haven't heard of it but things are always slow in getting here. xv
ReplyDeleteLOVE that show. I'm a former pastry chef who has always wanted to be part of a large, crazy and loving Italian family (I settled for marrying into a small, crazy, slightly cold and judgemental Jewish family instead), so i think I have a leg up on getting adopted (sorry). AND I lost my mom a few years ago so Mama would be such a comfort to me. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteDon't you LOVE when Mama yells?!
Love the show! And OMG Jeannine I can so relate! When I moved to VA and asked around for an Italian bakery, not only didn't I find one (or any bakery for that matter) they pronounced it Eye-talian.
ReplyDeleteLove the show and thought bridezilla was unbelievable. (Who would marry her? Hopefully someone just like her.) But the biggest problem, as mentioned above, is that I always crave good cake after watching! Not good.
ReplyDeleteI'm one of his newest, hard-core fans! My kids and I watched a cake boss marathon last week and couldn't pull ourselves away from the couch. I didn't get dressed until 1:30...yikes!!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea just how much fun the Cake Boss could be! If I were you, I'd head on down and see him!!
I love this show and I must tell you, I am probably as obsessed as you. I just can't get enough of the show. The psycho bride was the best and he still made her another amazing cake.
ReplyDeleteI'm addicted to that show! I just joined his Facebook page, too.
ReplyDeleteWant them to adopt you, huh? I want to MOVE INTO that bakery! Oh my word! I have three words: LOBSTER TAIL PASTRIES!
I die laughing with each episode -- what a great find!
Ruth
I'm such a reality show junkie that I'll now tune in for Cake Boss. Is it on TLC?
ReplyDeleteThat quilted cake for the crazy bride was tdf. I can't wait for more!
ReplyDeleteOMG!!! You're hilarious! But I fully agree, I also want them to adopt me so I can learn how to make those amazing cakes!! Loving your blog and Cake boss, they both make my day!
ReplyDeleteRegards,
Reality T.V. Junkie
Sounds like I'm the only one who's out.
ReplyDeleteI’ve seen a few bits and pieces of the show. In my Event Planning hay-day I spoke to him on the phone and he was a bit full of himself. Now, I will say I think he’s probably a great guy who just knows he’s good at what he does but it frustrated me to no end. And I’ve seen him on the Food Network behave just how he did on the phone with me so I just can’t get into him. I admit, I’m petty like that but the cakes do have a lot of wow factor in a commercial sorta way. They really speak to a large group.
wondered if the cakes are good...they are gorg...
ReplyDeleteLOVE this show.
ReplyDeleteI live in Hoboken and go in there for cakes and cookies for my Italian in-laws. If you ever make a trip in let me know. They're as funny in the bakery behind the counter as they are on TV.
ReplyDeletePlease come out to Hoboken, Mrs. Limestone! :)
ReplyDeleteBTW, the beautiful sign went up for filming. I'm glad they did that, it looks really nice in person.
I've just recently gotten hooked on this show and LOVE it!! Being from Jersey and living in DC, I especially love it because their accents remind me of home :)
ReplyDeleteI love Buddy and all the beautiful cakes him and his staff make. His sister Mary drives me nuts on the show though. lol.
ReplyDeleteme and my whole family loves cake boss its the greatest show because its so amazing i think you should keep up the good work because its wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeletei love this show, the cake looks so great and how u make them is unreal. I love you guys keep the good work up
