At just 9.5 feet wide, this house at 75 1/2 Bedford Street is billed as the narrowest home in NYC. (Not sure if that is true.) Its also rumored to have a past life with Cary Grant, John Barrymore and Margaret Mead.
The interior is just 8 feet wide.

But before you knock it, skinny house living isn't as crazy as it might appear. My last house was a measley 13 feet wide. The only thing that was difficult about that was finding furniture that wouldn't overwelm the space. Now I'm living large with a 20 footer - its definitely nicer to have hallways, its not that big of a deal to live with less room. I know 20 feet is a laughable width to those outside of urban row house sprawl but it really is more than enough.

So yea, its a little bit on the narrow side but I still think this house is fabulous. It needs a little work in the interior for sure but I'd love to have a crack at it.
Did I mention this can be yours for the bargain basement price of $2.75 million? Here is the real estate listing. Now don't all run out and buy it at once!
wow, that is small and a bit pricey, but i do think it's precious.

ReplyDeleteWow! I guess you have to be really creative, living in NYC. :) I think it would be awesome for a single person, or a couple, but I couldn't do it with my kids! Fun post...loved the old tax records photo!
ReplyDeleteWe could do it! We once lived in 380 sq ft. that was 8.5 wide (for 2 years). It makes our current small house feel big (to us).
ReplyDeleteI saw a similar house featured on some HGTV show, don't recall which at the moment. That narrow house was in Boston? The owner did an amazing job utilizing the narrow space...whoever buys this one should call on you for help!!

I read about this house for sale in the papers a few days back. The space was originally an alleyway between the two adjacent houses. Although quite skinny, it boasts lots of windows and even a skylight and supposedly offers a very airy feel becuase of it. they predict it will sell for the asking price as the house is a bit of a novelty and also boasts some very famous previous owners as you mentioned.

ReplyDeleteI am so tempted to grab a tape measure and see how wide my office at work is!!! I have a feeling it may be wider than 8 feet...I can't imagine my whole house measuring that width. I hope this sweet house finds its perfect owner.

ReplyDeleteOur old townhome was built in the rowhouse style & narrow living wasn't bad! TJust took some getting used to & it was all about the vertical storage!
ReplyDeletemakes me feel good about my railroad at 11 feet wide - and i have a hallway between the front room and the back along two rooms so those rooms are barely 8 feet (the length of a queen size mattress).

I saw this on yahoo front page and my co-worker and I looked it up... It's adorable. I especially love the address- 75 1/2. I want my address to be 1/2 anything!

ReplyDeleteThe price is crazy in an abstract way - its not that insane considering its in Manhattan. Its got a lot of sq footage and a private house is incredibly hard to find. There are plenty of apartments at this and higher prices that are a lot less interesting than this.
