If you have been reading since last year, you'll know Im a big fan of the day. A couple of photos from 2008.
I'm struggling with options about decorating the front of the house this year. None of my concepts are really coming together perfectly in my mind. But I'm narrowing down on something now so stay tuned.
In the meantime, I thought I'd share some general inspiration photos found on flickr.

I even have trouble understanding other adults who don't take advantage of the holiday. How can you not enjoy an event that is all about enjoying yourself? Children and adult alike get to take a break from the everyday and have a little bit of fun. No gifts to wrap, not long lines at the post office, no obligations whatsoever. Who can't use a little more joy in their life? So if you're one of those people that pull their shades on October 31, I strongly encourage you to dress up and get with the program. Trust me, you'll like it! (Ok, maybe you wont - but at least give it a shot. You might surprise yourself.) A special request to parents - please dress up with your kids. Aside from the obvious benefits, those photos will be priceless years down the road.
For those of you ware just as enamored with Halloween as I am, please share the projects you've seen or are about to tackle. I'd love to hear any suggestions for my own festivities too!

I am overly excited about Halloween, and I couldn't agree more that the festivities & decorating should begin on September 1st! I'm loving lots of burlap covered items, white pumpkins, mercury glass & black glitter for this year! Thanks for sharing, I look forward to more fall posts!

ReplyDeleteHalloween in Brazil is rather non-existent - and I think it's such a wonderful holiday! We get to celebrate only because we're down here with the U.S. Gov't.
Avery was given a cute little charcoal twill dress, and it immediately made me think of Mary Poppins, so I'm in the midst of collecting Poppins-esque gear for her complete costume. Can't wait!!

ReplyDeleteI can't wait to decorate as it's our first holiday season in our first house. I'm definitely planning on doing silhouettes in our front windows, a la Martha. Row of pumpkins on our pot ledges, and I have a big black and purple spider from ou rporch deocrations last year that I might just suspend amongst our many trees in the front yard. So excited to see what you do, loved your decor last year!

ReplyDeleteNow, as an adult I'm saddened that the objective at every Halloween party is to see just how slutty every costume can be made. It's kind of annoying.
The hubs is out of town almost all of October, which means I get to decorate without his disapproving stares. Score!
I LOVE Halloween! I've been racking my brain trying to think of a good costume. Where did you buy the rat decals that you have on the stairs? They are so cool.
ReplyDeleteTrue to our DIY-nature, this year I'll be decorating pumpkins by using my drill to put many holes in them, creating almost a lacy effect. And with this being Chloe's first Halloween, we're all dressing up... she as a chicken, and we as farmer and wife :)

The last all out Halloween party we had was 4 years ago {back when we still lived with roommates!}. It was so much fun. I made witches brew & put food grade dry ice in it. It wasn't expensive & the fog was spectacular for ambiance!

Heidi - So true. I dont understand the skanky costumes. 99% of people do not look very good in them. Plus its cold in October - why are you practically naked?

My daughter is way into the spooky side of Halloween. Not gory but spooky. So, we have to decorate. I'm on the lookout for ideas. I wish I had a porch to put monogrammed pumpkins out on.

This is my favorite time of year and Halloween one of the greatest holidays! I love decorating for Halloween, and I totally consider September 1 the acceptable day to start decorating, too!

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. Last year we set up a display of trolls dressed up along with mini pumpkins on the portico. Of course I had Batman and the Joker (Heath Leager version) handing out goodies in front of the display in case any of the trolls mysteriously disappeared. It's always so much fun no matter what the age.

ReplyDeleteI've been away on business for the past three Halloweens, but this year I'll finally be around! I love it - when I lived with friends, we had big parties with costume contests and decorated our whole house. It was a blast!
Laura - They are black cardboard. Martha Stewart makes them and they are about $5 so well worth not having to cut out myself. But they can be pretty easily done if you are so inclined.

ReplyDeleteI lurve Halloween, always have. My girls are going to be Dorothy and the Cowardly Lion from the WofO. I bought their costumes, but didn't want to fork over major cash for my husband (the Tin Man) and myself (the Scarecrow). So now I have to come up with some thrifty adult costumes. I'm thinking lots of silver spray paint!

I'm a fan too. Last year we had a witches' hat decorating contest and my husband photographed each person who attended. I think this year I will have everyone bring a decorated mask.
ReplyDeleteI started posting about Halloween in July but thanks for reminding me that it is September and time to start the festivities. I have some new decorations I'm itching to put out. I think I'm going to do table scapes like pirate treasure this year. You know small trunks with old lace, tarnished silver, strands of pearls, and other jewelry. (Click on Halloween in my sidebar and it will lead you to old posts. I especially liked my graveyard in the front yard...tombstone, wrought iron, lanterns.)
