As far as Im concerned, the stroke of midnight September 1 is the moment it becomes socially acceptable to start discussing Halloween. So lets get to it.
If you have been reading since last year, you'll know Im a big fan of the day. A couple of photos from 2008.
I'm struggling with options about decorating the front of the house this year. None of my concepts are really coming together perfectly in my mind. But I'm narrowing down on something now so stay tuned.
In the meantime, I thought I'd share some general inspiration photos found on flickr.
I somehow managed to delete all the links to the original photos so I'll have go back and find them all. Until then, some of the photos above can be found at: Love Manor , Insunlight , Poetic Home , Bettie bet, Come undone, Monicarc80, MMGoode , Boju, Tafari , Demon's Rest , Sweet Life Creations
I even have trouble understanding other adults who don't take advantage of the holiday. How can you not enjoy an event that is all about enjoying yourself? Children and adult alike get to take a break from the everyday and have a little bit of fun. No gifts to wrap, not long lines at the post office, no obligations whatsoever. Who can't use a little more joy in their life? So if you're one of those people that pull their shades on October 31, I strongly encourage you to dress up and get with the program. Trust me, you'll like it! (Ok, maybe you wont - but at least give it a shot. You might surprise yourself.) A special request to parents - please dress up with your kids. Aside from the obvious benefits, those photos will be priceless years down the road.
For those of you ware just as enamored with Halloween as I am, please share the projects you've seen or are about to tackle. I'd love to hear any suggestions for my own festivities too!

I am overly excited about Halloween, and I couldn't agree more that the festivities & decorating should begin on September 1st! I'm loving lots of burlap covered items, white pumpkins, mercury glass & black glitter for this year! Thanks for sharing, I look forward to more fall posts!
ReplyDeleteoh! fun ideas. i especially like the typewriter + boo! i can't wait to see what you come up with this year. your decor last year was amazing!!
ReplyDeleteDear Mrs Limestone,
ReplyDeleteuhm i wish i lived near you so i could be your friend & attend a halloween party. lol.
....can't wait to see what you have in store :)
All I have to say is tha bottom right hand pic is super duper scary! wooooooooo haaaaa haaaaaa
ReplyDeleteOooh! Some of those flickr images are downright eerie! I absolutely adore your mice-on-the-steps look from last year!
ReplyDeleteHalloween in Brazil is rather non-existent - and I think it's such a wonderful holiday! We get to celebrate only because we're down here with the U.S. Gov't.
Avery was given a cute little charcoal twill dress, and it immediately made me think of Mary Poppins, so I'm in the midst of collecting Poppins-esque gear for her complete costume. Can't wait!!
Oh my gosh! I love your decor from last year, how FUN!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to decorate as it's our first holiday season in our first house. I'm definitely planning on doing silhouettes in our front windows, a la Martha. Row of pumpkins on our pot ledges, and I have a big black and purple spider from ou rporch deocrations last year that I might just suspend amongst our many trees in the front yard. So excited to see what you do, loved your decor last year!
ReplyDeleteHalloween is one of my favs, too! I love it. I started making halloween banners this week. :)
ReplyDeleteHalloween was my absolute favorite holiday as a kid. Hello, free candy!!!
ReplyDeleteNow, as an adult I'm saddened that the objective at every Halloween party is to see just how slutty every costume can be made. It's kind of annoying.
The hubs is out of town almost all of October, which means I get to decorate without his disapproving stares. Score!
I LOVE Halloween! I've been racking my brain trying to think of a good costume. Where did you buy the rat decals that you have on the stairs? They are so cool.
ReplyDeleteTrue to our DIY-nature, this year I'll be decorating pumpkins by using my drill to put many holes in them, creating almost a lacy effect. And with this being Chloe's first Halloween, we're all dressing up... she as a chicken, and we as farmer and wife :)
ReplyDeleteNot sure what you should do, but I am eagerly looking forward to the result. I don't know how you will top last year's installation!
The last all out Halloween party we had was 4 years ago {back when we still lived with roommates!}. It was so much fun. I made witches brew & put food grade dry ice in it. It wasn't expensive & the fog was spectacular for ambiance!

I first found your blog last year around Halloween, and you had me hooked.
ReplyDeleteThis year the timing is perfect for planning a party since Halloween falls on a Saturday. I can't wait to see what you dream up this year.
Oh wow! I love what you did with the stairs. That is such a good idea!
ReplyDeletethere is a new Martha SIP out on Halloween that's good. some things I'd seen, but there was new stuff too, including costume idea for adults. I think she likes Halloween as much as you do!
ReplyDeleteI'm so with you on this one- I love Halloween! I've decided to throw a party this year and I'm in the process of making the invites, they are coming along great so far!
ReplyDeleteI dont have many details yet, but I am ordering lots of stuff from those science lab supply stores, like test tubes for shots, beakers for drinks etc.
Heidi - So true. I dont understand the skanky costumes. 99% of people do not look very good in them. Plus its cold in October - why are you practically naked?
ReplyDeleteLifestyle - Martha Stewart sells them but you can make them yourself too. This is two packages so the total damage was $10.
Jennifer - Whats SIP stand for?
My daughter is way into the spooky side of Halloween. Not gory but spooky. So, we have to decorate. I'm on the lookout for ideas. I wish I had a porch to put monogrammed pumpkins out on.
ReplyDeleteCan I hire you?
ReplyDeleteI don't support Pagan rituals and/or holidays. Just kidding, I HEART Halloween! Esp. b/c it's during my favorite season, fall.
ReplyDeleteI must say, Halloween is THE ONE time all year that I'm terrified of your house. Mission accomplished.
This is my favorite time of year and Halloween one of the greatest holidays! I love decorating for Halloween, and I totally consider September 1 the acceptable day to start decorating, too!
ReplyDeleteVery spokey but fun! I think I enjoy Halloween more now then I did as a kid.
ReplyDeleteYour decor was amazing last year! Can't wait to see what ur up to this year!
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking about Hallowen since July! I don't know if I'll be doing much decorating this year or not because I'll be settling into the house, but I've already got some ideas.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I'm ordering cabinets this week. Thanks for all your help!
You are so creative! Perhaps next year I will have a house to decorate. This year I have a wedding on halloween, so the only thing I get to dress up in is black tie :(
ReplyDeleteWe don't really celebrate Halloween in Australia but you know what I think I just might this year. You are right. No gifts. No obligations. Just fun!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to do it. Thanks for inspiring me!
Viv xx
Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. Last year we set up a display of trolls dressed up along with mini pumpkins on the portico. Of course I had Batman and the Joker (Heath Leager version) handing out goodies in front of the display in case any of the trolls mysteriously disappeared. It's always so much fun no matter what the age.
ReplyDeleteI adore the mice on your stairs! Are they decals? Where did you get them?
ReplyDeleteI've been away on business for the past three Halloweens, but this year I'll finally be around! I love it - when I lived with friends, we had big parties with costume contests and decorated our whole house. It was a blast!
Laura - They are black cardboard. Martha Stewart makes them and they are about $5 so well worth not having to cut out myself. But they can be pretty easily done if you are so inclined.
ReplyDeletevery creepy! I love Halloween except for the nights that my husband have to work! I'm scary, but I do plan to dress up with my kids this year
ReplyDeletei can not WAIT to see your plans! i love all of the thought and effort you put into your halloween decor :)
ReplyDeleteYeah! Someone who gets as excited as me for Halloween! It's my fav holiday...next to the 4th of July. I'll definitely have to share photos our annual Halloween party and our fun costumes we come up with every year. I get WAY into it!
ReplyDeleteI lurve Halloween, always have. My girls are going to be Dorothy and the Cowardly Lion from the WofO. I bought their costumes, but didn't want to fork over major cash for my husband (the Tin Man) and myself (the Scarecrow). So now I have to come up with some thrifty adult costumes. I'm thinking lots of silver spray paint!
ReplyDeleteLOVE, love, love Halloween! I will try to post a few picutes of some of our Halloween decor over the next few weeks. Stop over to our (very plain and yet to be designed) blog to see "Mr. Bones". For the record..."Mr. Bones" in one of our skeletons. ;-)

I'm a fan too. Last year we had a witches' hat decorating contest and my husband photographed each person who attended. I think this year I will have everyone bring a decorated mask.
ReplyDeleteI started posting about Halloween in July but thanks for reminding me that it is September and time to start the festivities. I have some new decorations I'm itching to put out. I think I'm going to do table scapes like pirate treasure this year. You know small trunks with old lace, tarnished silver, strands of pearls, and other jewelry. (Click on Halloween in my sidebar and it will lead you to old posts. I especially liked my graveyard in the front yard...tombstone, wrought iron, lanterns.)
Love Halloween! Can't wait..
