There was a lot of major damage to the top of it so I sanded that down to the bare wood. The rest of the piece got a light sand - just enough to give the paint something to grip. Then I washed it all down with a mix of water and TSP (a degreaser).
After a bit of waffling, I decided to just go ahead and paint it Martha Stewart Plumage because a) I liked the color and b) I had nearly a full quart of it at hand. I can always repaint it if I tire of the shade but I've been really digging teal lately so I jumped in. On it went. (No, I didn't prime. Maybe I should have but I figured I could get away without it.)
For the very observant you will notice Im painting right in my living room over a nest of old newspaper. A girls gotta do what a girls gotta do.
It was looking good but I wanted to add a little more. A little gold paint would help tie it to some of the other metallic elements in the room. Out came the overhead projecter to help me draw a world map on the top.
Turns out I couldn't quite fit the whole world on there but you get the picture. Not navigation ready but I think it adds a fun texture to the piece. If I have somehow missed your hometown island or misrepresented your favorite peninsula, I am truly sorry.
The final touches were a little gold to the legs and a very thin coat on the hardware to bring out some shine. It still needs a top coat but I'm waiting for the whole thing to cure before I touch it again.
I'm loving the color and how it turned out but clearly I need to add this shade of blue into other parts of the room. Anyone have any fabric recommendations that has some of this shade in it? I'm having a hard time finding some.
Lots more to do in here before I feel its 'complete; but for now I'm feeling accomplished. What do you think?
This looks awesome! Loving the map on top.

Gorgeous! I'm sure you have a bunch of pissed off Aussie readers, but it was worth it :) I was in JoAnn fabrics the other day after a long search through 3 other fabric stores and found exactly what I was looking for. Maybe try there. Lots of fun geometric fabrics at mine.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE the colour... and the addition of that map on the top is just perfect. I'll be tackling an old dresser for our nursery soon and I'm trying to come up with something fun to paint on it aside from just making it one colour...
ReplyDeleteLooks awesome! Love the gold touches. I never would have thought of that!
ReplyDeleteI love the unexpected touch of the map. Nice job!
ReplyDeleteI love the unexpected touch of the map. Very nice!!
ReplyDeleteSorry for the double comment! I apparently haven't fully woken up enough to realize my first comment posted.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great color. I really love the world motif on the top. How creative and inventive. Im not sure what you currently have in your home, but you could try frame pieces of fabrics that have the blue color and adding prints to the top of them. Ive used that technique quite a few times. Keep us updated on the progress.

Holy moly - that rocks! Love it, love it, love it!

Looks awesome! What paint color is that? LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteSo cool. I'm a sucker for maps on just about anything.
ReplyDeleteMy bad.. I guess I could have read a little more.. just read the paint color ;)
ReplyDeleteBAM!!! Love it! The "worldly" part is so you since you guys travel often! I'm still trying to find a fabric that works with mine. I'm just going to add 2 Chiang Mai dragon pillows to my sofa! Not sure if they will work in your space, but I've been craving some of that fabric for years!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I would've never thought of the blue & gold combo... it's amazing!
ReplyDeleteLove it love it love it.
ReplyDeleteThe painted map is so clever. Looks great!!

ReplyDeleteOoh la la! Such a creative way to add your stamp on the piece.
ReplyDeleteomg I absolutely LOVE this! the turquoise is so lovely and saturated, and the map - I swear I am getting a major jones for painting a map on a piece of furniture!!!
ReplyDeleteLove this piece...you did an awesome job! Love your blog and your home!
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT!!! No i dont love it, i am IN love with it! I will forgive you for not painting South Africa. love the colour! Definitely now considering that colour for my dresser.
ReplyDeleteIncredible! The world map is such a clever idea and I just love the paint color.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the plumage blue! Blues are so hard to pick...I will have to go pick up a quart!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it. Seriously, that has got to be my most favourite colour ever! LOVE the map... this is re-fabbed gold!!!
ReplyDeleteSo lovely! I liked the unexpected touch of glitz. It seems perfect for you since you enjoy traveling the world. I have a couple of pieces of furniture with sentimental value that I'm considering sanding and painting/staining and this has definitely inspired me ... how much time would you recommend setting aside, say, to sand and refinish a small side table?
ReplyDeletegreat job!! It really looks fabulous! I loved painted furniture! Here is a link for Joann.com online fabrics...I think it would look great as an accent pillow. http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog/productdetail.jsp?CATID=cat2143&PRODID=xprd943938

What a great idea! Totally digging it!
ReplyDeleteI love the color. I'm going through a crush on different shades of teal and peacock right now so I really, really love it. And the gold, especially the handles, just looks spectacular with it.
ReplyDeleteI really, really LOVE this! That gold map makes it!
ReplyDeletep.s. this is off topic, but where did you find the sputnik light for shore home bathroom? I've been doing som research and want to purchase one. : )
It looks great! Me likes :)
ReplyDelete...Wondering what you meant by "top coat"? Thanks!
Beautiful! And so appropriate for you two world travelers. You should mark all the places you've been : )

you did an amazing job! I love the world map on top! The whole room looks amazing. You could add blue candles to the table or big blue vases in a corner?
ReplyDeleteLove it! I have a nightstand project in mind, and that color might be just the ticket (I was going to use a sky blue milk paint, but I'm reconsidering.
ReplyDeleteFor fabric, you might want to check out Alexander Henry's Fulham Road collection -- Oxford Butterfly in Blue would look gorgeous (I really want a yard of Regent Peacock in Indigo for my LR but I can't find it in stock ANYWHERE).
Oh my gosh! That tuned out amazing! I love the color and the map on top is perfect!
ReplyDeleteWow - how creative to add the world map to the top! It looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteThat looks beautiful, the Map on the surface is such a lovely, unexpected, incredibly creative surprise!
ReplyDeleteYOU.

FABULOUS.

Absolutely stunning! Bravo, Mrs. L., bravo.
ReplyDeleteWhat grade sandpaper did you use for sanding? I'm wanting to paint some furniture but have never attempted it except on bare wood and don't want to find it peeling in the future.
Looks great! Two questions - do you use an additive when you paint furniture to get that "brushless" look? And did you do the whole thing with the roller, or did you use a brush?
ReplyDeleteOh wow, it is GORGEOUS!! Love the world map idea!!
ReplyDeleteAWESOME.
ReplyDeleteVery nice, love the map idea.
ReplyDeleteWow! Beautiful! I would have never thought about using the overhead projector or add something to the top. Makes it so much more interesting and feels whimsical, yet still serious in shape. Really nice!
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome idea! and the color is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!
ReplyDeleteThat blue color is so perfect, and the map! wow! soo cool!
the photos of the room are gorgeous and the curves on that dresser...so much better dressed in blue!
Ah-Mazing work! I'm new to this blog and I'm loving everything I see on here. I feel so inspired and will be borrowing some of your great ideas.
ReplyDeleteCrazy love this!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great.
ReplyDeleteInsanely gorgeous..so jealous!
ReplyDeleteHow cool! I love the unique detail you added. I have been obsessed with teal, so I will be taking note of that paint color. :o)
ReplyDeleteI have similar chest drawer/sofa table (what ever you called it) Bought in Manhattan flea market a long time ago. It has yellow finish but really it is more like cream color because of too much of sun exposure. When saw this project posted by Centsational Girl ; I fell in love all over again with that piece and this is such an inspiration. Thank you...ohh by the way we are about to moving in to a new house, so this drawer project will be a make over for me in the new house. Thank you to you and Centsational Girl for posting this ! It is really beautiful....!!!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! It immediately had me wondering what I could paint on the top of the buffet I'm about to refinish!
ReplyDeleteI don't like it I LOVE it !!! Fantastic job and the map GENIUS !!!
ReplyDeleteAll the best,
Kathy :)
I Love the Creativity you put into it and you're so energetic too! I want some of that!

ReplyDeleteWow that turned out so cool! I would have never thought to put a map of the world on top - so perfect for you and hubs since you travel so much.
ReplyDeleteI'm comment #66, I think that says it all.

ReplyDeleteLove, love, love how this turned out. The gold world map is genius! It pulls in the gold from your chandelier. Sorry no ideas about fabric for the rest of the room. But I do think this piece turned out super special.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE it Stefanie! Fantastic Job!
ReplyDeleteWow! What a great project. I just love how it turned out!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love this makeover. What an awesome idea to add gold!
ReplyDeleteI wish I had an ounce of your creativity! :)

Ahhh this is just AWESOME!!! The map is gorgeous on it and Plumage is a beautiful color too. I'm diggin' teal lately too. :) Great job girl!
ReplyDeleteAmazing!!!
ReplyDeleteSo fun! I love the shade of blue! I can't believe you painted in your living room- my hubby woulda had a fit:)
ReplyDeleteLove, LOVE! It came out amazing. Have you checked out any of the Annie Selke fabrics? Not sure if any of her blues are teal enough but worth a look!
ReplyDeleteI love how you added your travel love into the piece. It definitely fits and completed it.
ReplyDeleteI love the blue and gold mix and I think the top turned out great!
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty crazy, yet totally perfect. I love it - it's amazing!
ReplyDeleteI think it's gorgeous and I'll def be painting my armoire plummage now!! Thanks for the test run! :)
ReplyDeleteI don't have any blue in that exact shade in my living room, but it looks great with the lighter shades I do have.
This turned out fabulous! The map is the best part!
ReplyDelete{Long low wolf whistle}
ReplyDeleteLa la la Limestone...ya did it again!
Looks awesome! Especially love the gold map on the top-what a great idea!
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful I just love the color. The idea of the map on top is also so creative. Ahh just love it!
ReplyDeletebeautiful piece!
ReplyDeleteJudy Ross has some beautiful blue (and expensive) pillows that might work.
Simply....Stunning!!!
ReplyDeleteSeriously beyond cool, I'm telling ya, you simply amaze me!!
ReplyDeleteStef, this is GORGEOUS!! What an awesome way to bring your love for travel into the room.
ReplyDeleteI love that. Very cool idea. I wish I was crafty like all you crafty people.
ReplyDeletePerhaps you should check Ikea. I just did a search on the site, and there were 66 pages of gorgeous and affordable fabrics (tons with your blue included!). Hope that helps! Love the dresser, by the way.
ReplyDeletePlain and simple(not the piece itself, of course), I love it!!!
ReplyDeletethat is genius! This has my creative wheels turning now.
ReplyDeleteYou are so talented! Did you draw that free hand? Love it!
ReplyDeleteOh wow look how that turned out. Using the overhead projector was so "Macguyver".
ReplyDeleteWHO would have thought that would look so great...only you! What a very cool idea!
ReplyDeleteOne word - gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteWow! This looks phenomenal! The overhead-projector/map is pure genius... and I love how the hardware really pops with that extra dash of gold.
ReplyDeleteReally fantastic work. I'll keep my eyes peeled for some fabric suggestions...
Fantastic job (even if my homeland didn't make it on :) ). You might find some fabric you like here http://www.premierprintsfabric.com/lultrt.shtml
ReplyDeletebrilliant idea! you're so creative!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the color you chose- I think it looks perfect in that room and really will be awesome with some extra touches of that blue in pillows. I also think the extra gold handles were a great touch as it picks up that bit of sparkle in the room that keeps things from looking too drab. Personally, I wouldn't have done the map on top, but it does add another layer to the room, and again, I think that the room needs soom sparkle. Keep working on this room- I love seeing each new addition!!!
ReplyDeleteI love this! Adding the map in gold to the top "made" this dresser. I am definitely going to "steal" this idea. Thank you so much for the inspiration.

It turned out so beautifully!
ReplyDeleteI shop at www.quilthome.com often - there are so many fabrics and designers to choose from (Amy Butler, Joel Dewberry, and Valori Wells are some of my favorites)!
There's one by Valori Wells here http://quilthome.com/product_info.php/products_id/7976
and another by Anna Maria Horner here http://quilthome.com/product_info.php/products_id/4635
that could be nice. Regardless, there's a lot to look through there!
Holy crap this is like the BEST DIY project I've seen anywhere! Its not even like a DIY project, it looks like something from a fancy store that cost thousands- LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!! I think I might have to re-blog about it- you know with the wedding coming up I need lots of things to keep my readers busy and this is amazing!
ReplyDeletethat. is. so. cool! i hope you're getting all the comments notified because mine will be way down at the bottom. awesome color.
ReplyDeleteAlso- how in the world do you have an overhead projector handy?
ReplyDeleteOooh, lovely! I love the addition of the map, definitely a keeper :)
ReplyDeletethis is awesome! What a great project to do with my home school kiddos :D
ReplyDeleteGreat story. Love the bit about the overhead projector simply popping up -- do you own one?
ReplyDeleteYou've turned this into a very interesting piece!
ReplyDeleteWOW! It looks gorgeous. I will admit I was a bit skeptical about the gold map at first but seeing it in the room..it is perfect. It adds a little edge to it that it unexpected. LOVE that color.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see that you went bold with the color it came out great! I also enjoy the touch of gold on the top with the map. This is so funny that you posted/have this particular sideboard, I have the EXACT same one! I was just talking to my husband the other day about how much I hate it and want to paint it! So, thank you for the inspiration. I'll have to post a picture when I get around to painting mine to get your feedback.
ReplyDeleteI love the creative idea of the map!! :) Thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteI just love this! What a fantastic idea :)
ReplyDeleteThis Dwell Studio pillow from Target looks like it will match the blue... http://t.co/XJq9ODG
ReplyDeleteI bought it for my bedroom makeover and I love it. It is my color inspiration for everything. I even found Oops paint at Lowe's that is a perfect match.
I love it!! The color is really nice and it looks like a good piece of furniture.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely Stunning!!! You are so very creative, please, keep giving me inspiration! We are currently saving for our dream vintage home (in the South)! Reading your blog reminds me of why we are sacrificing so much for our dream.
ReplyDeleteWarmest Regards,

I have the identical dining room set that I grew up with and inherited. It is by Drexel Heritage and my mother bought it in the 50's. It's fruitwood and I have been too timid to paint it as you have. It looks great...what was your inspiration for color/design? The table and sideboard both need some love and I've been struggling what to do with them.
ReplyDeleteI love it! It's been a while since I have visited to see what you are up to in the Limestone, and I see that I need to catch up. This is such a novel idea, and it works so well.
ReplyDeleteThis is really pretty. I'm not a fan of gold but this makes me change my mind! Great work :D
ReplyDeletelove it! Try Mod Green Pod for some organic cotton (lovely) fabrics.
ReplyDeleteWell it would definitely depend on the shape its in but a small table shouldn't take more than a couple of hours (spaced out over several days). Good luck!
ReplyDeleteOh thank you - i really like that fabric!
ReplyDeleteHi Joi - thanks. The sputnik light fixture came from ebay. Just do a search and you'll find one seller that has a ton of them. (He also has brass ones which I love but just didn't work for my bathroom)
ReplyDeleteThanks Liz. We thought of that but because the map cuts off a lot AND it needs to be sealed (so we can't update it), we thought no. But we are always talking about getting one of those pin maps.
ReplyDeleteThanks Pam. I used medium grit sandpaper - mostly because its what I had left from another project. I think its the right kind ot use anyway but not 100% sure.
ReplyDeleteNope, no additive. (Didn't even know there was such a thing). I used a roller for most of it but a brush for the parts a roller can't get to. You can't see any brush strokes on the blue part.
ReplyDeleteThe gold has a lot of texture from the brush - thats just how that gold paint works. I think it adds to the interest but I wouldn't even know how to get that gold paint smooth short of using a sprayer.
ha! The hubs wasn't too happy about it either but without an alternative, there wasn't much discussion.
ReplyDeleteI own one :)
ReplyDeleteYep, ours is from DH as well. Lucky you that you have more than one piece!
ReplyDeleteYep, I got one for Christmas a few years ago. I only pull it out once in a while but it proves to be handy.
ReplyDeleteWoah. That looks amazing! Crazy what a coat of paint can do. Great job.
ReplyDeleteGreat colour, it's such a focal point in the room!
ReplyDeleteVery cute & original! Love the color!
ReplyDeleteSo creative! Your house and the updated sideboard are gorgeous! Did you do the molding on the walls too?
ReplyDeleteThanks! The molding came with the house (although some bits of it required a bit of rework, can't take credit for it.)
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThis is lovely. Hope to see you at My Dream Canvas!
ReplyDeleteTruly stunning!
ReplyDeleteI may have to try me some Martha... I am still mad they discontinued Ralph so I have been boycotting. You are making me convert to the other side! Love the gold touches! Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous! I normally don't like gold hardware but it looks stunning with the blue. The map is such a great touch! Love!
ReplyDeletestumbled over from centsational girl. i'm absolutely in LOVE with this! i think that's my favorite color combination!
ReplyDeleteHey- this might be a silly question, but seeing as you painted this piece in your house, how did you keep your cat from jumping on it/messing it up? My younger cat is on my furniture everyday, so I always paint stuff in my garage, but sometimes it is a pain to bring things down and then back up the stairs. The piece looks beautiful and I love the peacock and gold combo! -Anna
ReplyDeleteFantastic! I love the teal and gold together!
ReplyDeleteIts not a silly question but I dont have any suggestions really. My cat jumps on everything but for whatever reason, he doesn't jump on anything that has just been painted. I assume he doesn't like the smell? He'll hang around me when Im painting so I keep an eye out then but when its drying, he doesn't really want to be on it.
ReplyDeleteI love how u added the world map on top .. picking up the color of the handle. Bravo!!!
ReplyDeleteI can't beleive I've only just seen this now!
ReplyDeleteIt complements the space perfectly- I absolutley love every thing in that room !!!

Wow, this is a really neat idea, especially for a globe-trotter such as yourself! :)
ReplyDeleteWould love to feature your sofa table on my blog please let me
ReplyDeleteKnow if this would be ok with you Lauren
Wow, I LOVE this!!!! I love maps already...
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I love the blue...I love the gold...especially the map!
ReplyDeleteYour room is really beautiful.
I love this project, I wish more folks would restore great old furniture like this.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely great restoration.
ReplyDeleteTry Calico Corners for blue fabric. Lots there which would work well. They make it easy, too....you can search by color. Good luck. Room looks terrific. Dresser is smashing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty transformation. Found you through Pinterest. :-)

Very cool!
ReplyDeleteHi! I am enjoying your blog - especially your DIY projects. I love this sideboard into a worldy sofa table. I have a blog - mainly dealing with decorative painting projects - and I have found that when I am working outside my home a lot, my blog suffers. But then I later have a lot to blog about - with lots of before and after projects. How do you manage and organize your time? You, like me, are not an organiized person by nature. I have to learn to come up with some simpler DIY projects - so it fills up the blog (while waiting for me to finish the larger projects I have going).
ReplyDeleteLove your ideas and I love the way you write. I have to come and scour some of the places you mention in Brooklyn. I live on Long Island - so not a bad drive to your lovely borough. That could be a blogpost for me as well.
So glad I spent some time on your blog today.
Linda
Thanks for reading Linda. I may not be very organized with my things (my closet can attest to that!) but I'm very organized with my time. I work full time so I have to have a plan for my 'free' time. That said, I blog about my life - so I don't really do projects JUST for the blog. I figure if its not something I would use or want, there isn't much point in bothering to post about it. Thats why you'll see sometimes I have more projects going on during one point in the year than another.
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing! I just love the map on top.
ReplyDeleteIt looks beautiful! great work, the colour of blue and gold, along with the other parts of the room it just looks amazing. I was wondering what brand of gold paint did you use? and did you seal it with a primer?
ReplyDeleteI am also wondering what type of gold paint you used..... Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteThis is fabulous! I LOVE it. The map is interesting and original. I am getting ready to paint two old pieces so like Lia, I am wondering what type or brand of paint you used. Also was it like a "satin" finish?
ReplyDeleteGorgeous. I've pinned it as inspiration for my living room. I'll be mentioning this piece on my blog this Friday. Thanks for inspiring me.
ReplyDeleteChrista from www.controllingcraziness.blogspot.com
If you don't find fabric to match, get canvas cloth and paint it yourself with the same paint as the sofa table. You can cover cushions or do a painting and frame.
ReplyDeleteOh my word...I LOVE this. LOVE. Awesome job and thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeletewhat did you use to paint the handles gold or were they already gold?
ReplyDeleteThey were metallic but not quite gold so I added a very light rub of gold paint.
ReplyDeleteU... r a bad-ass MF b*tch! I would have never thought to put the world on that dresser, but it works amazingly with that color! you absolutely killed it...
ReplyDeleteI'm sure u missed my islands of Samoa... they always end up on the edge of that map layout. But hell, still a sweet idea!
My bad for the vulgarity, but that's how tuff this looks & the work u do. I'll be keepin' an eye on u...

ReplyDeleteGorgeous. Aside from the dresser (which is great), what a lovely apartment! Lots of character. I LOVE the floors. And are those pocket doors? Nice moldings and not painting to the ceiling really make the color pop. Great Job!
