Blegh.

We need a new mattress. Anyone have one they really love? As far as I can remember from the last time we needed one, mattress shopping is about the least fun kind of shopping in the universe. Boo-hiss.

Having nothing to do with my mattress, I've been a bit of a funk lately. I really don't enjoy feeling down at all so I need to snap myself out of it. Bear with me, I'm sure I'll be back to to normal in a bit.

What better way to cheer myself up than with some room revamping? If all goes well, we are going to repaint the shore bedroom a inky dark blue next week! Yeah. More on that later.

My Husband has a bad back and needs to have a very firm mattress.  We bought a new Serta.  I am quite boney and after one night of sleeping on it had bruises on my hipbones.  That was way too firm!  We bought a memory foam topper for around $80 and now we are in Heaven.  Seriously, it is the most comfortable bed now.  We love it.  Good luck with your shopping!

  2. mattress shopping is a bore, isn't it? when we got married, my husband was pretty insistent on a dual-chamber sleep number bed, and it truly is wonderful. he likes a firmer mattress and i like a softer one, so it's the perfect combo. perhaps take a peek or try one out?

  3. I love  our mattress, it's a Sterns and Foster.  We have had it for 8 years now and I still love climbing into bed at night.  Mattress shopping is kind of blah, too many choices and hard to remember which ones you like after trying out 50 different ones.  Looking forward to seeing the inky blue walls, we just painted our master bedroom Hale Navy and I love it!  Hope painting gets you  out of the funk.

We bought a new one from the Monterey Mattress company when we were stationed there in Monterey.  The store is super tiny and your mattress is made for you once it's ordered.  We've had it for two years and are still pleased.  Here is a link:

I've heard wonderful things about the Westin Heavenly Bed and they are available at Pottery Barn now.  We bought one that was way too firm and need to make a change as well.

Yup, mattress shopping is a total scam. The variations in price for the same exact mattress are appalling. Don't go to any of the big chain stores or you will get ripped off.  Here's my post from last year on the subject. http://www.houseography.net/2011/01/gift-of-sleep-lessons-in-mattress.html

I'll second the sleep number bed!! He likes firm, I like soft and cozy. Now we are both happy! Had it for maybe 8 years and it's still as great as the day we bought it.

Sleep.Number.Bed. Best sleep ever. :) We've had ours for 12 years and it's still the happiest place to go after a long hard day. I love that it's adjustable to my whims and needs. :) I'd much rather spend $$$ on things I can see and that add beauty but a good bed can't be beat.

long time lurker, infrequent commentor.  My husband & I bought a latex foam mattress (not the same as memory foam or temperpedic) and we LOVE LOVE LOVE it.  He sings a happy little bed song whenever we come home from traveling, and I have not had a single 'back blow-out' since we got it.  Here in Atlanta we bought from Original Mattress Factory, but Ikea has similar for a good price.
The best advice we got from our noncommission sales rep was take your time shopping. Don't just flop down on the bed and lay there for a minute.  Stay on it, relax and really settle into it.  It did make a difference for us!

mattress shopping is the worst!  we bought one a few years ago and it was a frustrating experience.  it's hard to shop around because the same thing will be named something different at a different store.  in the end, we spent way more than we had planned to get the mattress that we liked best.  that being said, we love our mattress.  i sleep so great.  when we moved in to our current house we discussed upgrading to a king instead of the queen bed, but we loved our mattress so much that we decided to just keep the queen!

good luck!  and i can't wait to see this blue bedroom!

My husband and I just bought a new mattress. He told me he was more comfortable in hotel beds when he's on the road than ours. YIKES! That couldn't stand...shopping emergency! We bought a firm variety of the Tempurpedic line. All I can say is...where has this mattress been all my life...WOW. A little pricey but very comfortable.

BTW...did you fix hubby's coffee table?

I'm not sure I can explain my love for our Sleep Number bed.  I tell every couple getting married that if they want to remain that way, they should by a SN STAT!!!! It's a pricey option, but I've never slept better or hurt less.  And neither has the husband.  Priceless.

I can't remember what type mattress we have but it is on the firm side without being hard.  We've had it 3 yrs or so.  But I'm looking ahead to the next mattress and the hubby would like a sleep number mattress.  We had originally thought about a Temperpedic but I know a couple of people that have that and they say they are hot.  I'm having hot flashes and sleep with a sheet and a fan on in the middle of winter so no hot mattress for me.  Good luck.

For the last two years, we've had brutal winters in Iowa so my roommate and I hosted a "Beat the Winter Doldrums" party. We turned the heat up, encouraged everyone to wear warm-weather clothes, and served fun, summery foods and drinks. It helped us get through the mid-winter blahs.

  23. We have a sleep number but while I liked it firm for back support it wasn't supper comfortable until we bought from costco a memory foam/gel topper and then put a thin down matteress cover over it.  Now it is HEAVEN-absolutely perfect.. No more back pain.  I had slept on my sis in laws bed which had the same set up and that is how I knew to combine them.  If you can't spring for a sleep number then just get a nice firm bed and combine the other elements.  Don't go for a soft bed though - the Chiropractor says they are the worst for your back.  Good luck!

2 of 2: I should probably add that the mattress we replaced was the sleep number which had the unintended consequence of creating a twin bed effect with the foam divider that separates the your-side/my-side features. Not good if you like to cuddle.

  25. I'm OBSESSED with my Custom Comfort mattress. The only downsides are the price and that they're heavy. But I've had mine for the nine years I've lived in my place and it has shown zero wear and tear. I can remember when I bought it a little old lady went into the showroom. She'd had her mattress for twenty years and even thought it hadn't broken down at all, she just wondered if maybe it wasn't time for a new one. : )

  27. 2 votes for Stearns and Foster. We bought one two years ago and at least once a week, the BF or I say, "I love our bed!!" It is the most comfortable thing I've ever slept on. I like firmish, he likes a bit softer, and this one is perfect. Good luck in your search, it can be tedious!

  28. After Hurricane Ike, my mattress was ruined.I was perfectly ok with that since I had never had a nice mattress anyway. I shopped for weeks before deciding on a Restonic. I had slept on a Simmons Beauty Rest while evacuated and thought it was amazing, but after going between two stores, one with Restonic and one with Simmons, I finally decided on the Restonic with a pillow top. I absolutely love it. I bought champagne, a movie, and new sheets to celebrate, put my pjs on at 8 p.m. and lived it up. I didn't care how much of  adork that made me. :)

    Mrs. Limestone,

We bought a Tempurpedic about 17 years ago and were happy until last year.  Tempurpedic went way up in price over the 17 years, so we looked around and found a place online called Bed in a Box.  We ordered one and we're happy.  It was easy and seems just as good as the Tempurpedic.

There was some off-gassing, but we went away for a few days and it seemed fine when we got back.

Good luck mattress shopping.  I know it isn't much fun.

Stay far far away from pillow topss! Our pillow top mattress is only 5 years old but  the pillow top part is already so mushed down on both sides and you can't flip a pillow top. I forget the brand but we paid quite a bit for it and I am ready to get a new non pillow top mattress. I wake up with hip pain every morning...

Hello!  It just so happens that my husband and I very recently purchased a new mattress.  My husband has a weak back and my back is fine, but we were both waking up with sore backs.  :/  My husband is the kind who does his research before buying anything, and we thought we were all set to buy a Sealy.  We had the good fortune of having a 20-yr mattress sales rep (very "low pressure") and he just talked with us quite a bit about the pro's and con's of ALL the brands -- so nice!  It is true you should take your time...spend 15 minutes on each mattress if you can.  Take several days (weeks) if you have to!  Our goal was to end up with a "cloud" bed like the ones my hubby slept in on a trip to Las Vegas, but still supportive.  We ended up getting a Simmons Ashebrook pillowtop, the Firm mattress.  I love the mattress, but to be honest, I am not crazy about the pillowtop due to the indentations in it.  The GOOD news is the same Simmons Ashebrook also comes without the pillowtop, if you like.  To remedy our situation, we also purchased a very thick down mattress topper from Pacific Coast.  This has made our bed like a heavenly cloud!  How did we ever sleep our entire lives without that down topper??  No more sore backs for either of us and we so enjoy & look forward to climbing into bed each night.  Best wishes to you in your search!

After realizing we were both in the middle of the mattress because it slopped that way we spent hours testing mattresses over days. 7 minutes per mattress test. We ended up with a Tempurpedic, but it was a close call with a memory foam from Sealy that was organic latex.  We love it so much. No hot spots or off-gassing like some people have noticed and my back has never felt better. We have had it about 4 months now. It used to be I enjoyed hotels as they were so much nicer than home, now when I travel I actually miss my bed.

I sleep on a sleep number whenever I am at a Radisson and I miss my Tempurpedic so much. You have to stay on your side to avoid the middle bit. And if you are a soft mattress kind of person beside you there will always be the firm outside rim of the mattress to avoid too.

  41. We were having the same problem: an old mattress and bed frame, so every time one of us moved, it was like a mini earthquake.  Not to mention the fact that it was just plain uncomfortable.  We decided to go with a tempurpedic, and we finally settled on the Rhapsody model.  It's been only 2 weeks, but we didn't even have the adjustment period they warned us about.  It's like I don't even notice that I'm sleeping on anything, and I mean that in the best possible way.  I'm not aware of being in an uncomfortable position or that the bed is sagging here or there.  We did have to go to theh store several times to make up our mind, but now we are thrilled!  Good luck!

  47. I've done a ton of research on mattresses and came to the conclusion that if you are interested in a tempurpedic, you should make the jump into a full latex bed. We don't have one yet but from what I've read, they are the best.

We are big Tempurpedic fans.  We've had ours for at least 12 years.  When our daughter moved from home (Florida) to Brooklyn, she needed a new bed.  Tempurpedic was definitely out of her price range.  She wasn't having much luck in her local search either.  I started doing research online and somehow stumbled onto www.bedinabox.com   I was very impressed with their customer service, their products and their prices.  She's had her bed for 4 years now and loves it.  If you're interested in a memory foam mattress, I highly recommend investigating this company which is based in Tennessee.  I plan to purchase our next bed from them.

I highly recommend a Miforma (http://www.miformamemoryfoammattress.com/). It is a natural, plant composite and it's made in the good ol' US of A! We have had one for about 1.5 years now and are very satisfied... definitely worth the investment.

  54. Stearns and Foster!  When my husband and I were dating, we picked out a new one for his place.  It has plugged along quite well.  A few years ago, when we bought our home in MN, we bought a new mattress and put it in the guest room.  I'm still confused as to why.  Brand new Stearns and Foster with a pillow top.  We switched the mattresses a few months ago and it is like sleeping on a cloud.  So comfortable.  So worth the extra dollars.  The only negative, if it is one, is that the mattress is higher than the previous.  I'm short but I get a kick out of climbing (jumping) into bed each night like a 5 year old.  Some folks say that you can't flip a pillow top bed.  True, you can't flip it over, but you can and should flip/rotate it from top to bottom every few months.  Head over to Macys and check out the Stearns and Foster.  You won't regret it.  I'm pretty sure that's my husband snoring away as I type this.....

  55. I hear great things about TempurPedic. I think if I ever upgrade to a King size bed (right now we're on a Full) I think I'll invest in one. I hope your funk subsides - lately freshly painted nails pull me out of my winter blues. The little things...

I've heard that the memory foam is temperature sensitive, and that's what makes the full latex foam better.  I've also heard from a very good gf and her supersized husband that 'intimate relations' can be challenging w/ temperpedic.  No such issues w/ our latex foam mattress ;D

we have a sleep number bed, and it was the best/worst thing we ever did. best because my husband and i both sleep like a dream. come to find out, he's an 85, i'm a 35; there is no way we would ever find a mattress we both like if we went the traditional route. however, it's the worst thing because now when we sleep anywhere but home, we sleep like garbage. double-edged sword. ;o)

    ReplyDelete
  59. MIchael10:08 AM

You are right...memory foam is temperature sensitive so it will be firmer in cold temps and softer in warmer ones. And to Sara's point, some people find that it is hot to sleep on. I can honestly say I have not had any problems with getting in and out of the bed or with it being too hot.

If you look at the reviews of Tempurpedic online, the average is 2.5 out of 5 stars. Initially I was worried because it had poor ratings, but what I've realized is that Tempurpedics are polarizing. You either absolutely love them (5 stars) or absolutely hate them (1 star) and hence the 2.5 star average. Your best bet is to book a hotel room with Tempurpedic and test it out. I believe Marriott has them, just as Radisson carries Sleep Number (which my parents have and love, but I am not a fan.)

And not to get too personal or gross, but my partner and I have had a lot of sex on our Tempurpedic in the year we've had it and have never faced any "challenges." being super sized in itself creates a whole new world of challenges and I'm guessing that is but one ;)

I have a tempurpedic and I've never slept so good in my entire life. They come with a 20 year warranty ( and now different firmness levels). AMazing. Best money we ever spent. Hreat for cuddling, and if your partner tosses and turns. You simply don't feel it. I do know Costco has their own brand of memory foam mattress that a couple of my friends are very happy with as well. Good luck and keep your head up.

  63. European Sleepworks makes mattresses from all natural materials - wool, steel, latex. It's a healthier way to sleep - these mattresses breathe really well. They're made in CA but there's a lovely store in Tribeca that carries them called Scott Jordan furniture. I encourage you to go there to the store and test them out! We ordered ours to be delivered to Park Slope about four years ago. We just moved out and this mattress is HEAVY but super-high quality and I would definitely recommend it.

http://www.tempurpedic.com/   We love our tempurpedic.  We've had it for eight years and still love it.  Yes, it is expensive but worth it.  My advice on finding a mattress is go lay on them and do it for more than a couple minutes.  Spend at least 20 - 30 minutes on each...lay down with Mr. Limestone and talk to pass the time.  Then you'll get a feel for what they really are like and how they feel once they've warmed up to your body heat & weight.

  69. My husband and I went with The Original Mattress Factory after many friends - including Sherry & John of YoungHouseLove suggested them (I can count them as friends if I just blogstalk them right?)

My husband was all for firm, firm, firm; but that's because he didn't know any different (I knew he needed some soft plushy goodness).  We had slept on a $4500 (retail) mattress in Las Vegas and were actually considering paying that much for a good mattress!  Thank goodness we didn't.

Heaven now consists of falling onto a Silhouette Plush Eurotop nightly.  I used to wake up 6-10 times a night.  Now I usually don't even remember falling asleep!  I would recommend it highly, and only $650 - $800 (Queen/King) for a doublesided mattress and a boxspring.

We bought our guest bed from Keetsa (www.keetsa.com) and are so happy with it for so many reasons...
    1. Made of Eco friendly materials! 2. No need to choose from 100 different models. Can they really all be that different? It's just too confusing! Keetsa has 7 options at different price points.3. The mattress does not require a box spring for support!4. We got the basic Keetsa bed frame and it is super strong, light, so easy to fold up and move, and has space for tons of storage nicely hidden by a bedskirt :)5. One of the best warranties - 12 years! 6. Reasonable prices all the time. You don't need to wait for a crazy 75% to get an affordable mattress (at least that's usually how things go at department stores here in Canada.)7. Free shipping to Canada and the US. The mattress comes in a small box - totally amazing! It's worth looking at their website just to see the process they use for shipping (more eco friendly since it takes up less space, no traditional delivery truck, etc.) 8. I think it was the person at the store in Toronto who told us about how the beds have cedar in them which bugs can't stand (not necessarily just bed bugs, but those little bugs that are always in your bed... Ewww.)  I don't see anything on the website about that though...9. Happy guests :)
