So when MyColortopia rolled out a new tool on their site that lets you upload a photo and virtually paint your room, I had to try it out. (Normally I would use photoshop to do the same thing but this tool is a lot easier.) It's aptly called Color My Room and its perfect for mentally trying a color on for size without getting hands dirty.
I uploaded my photo, selected the areas to be painted and the tool gave me an idea of what it would look like...
So what do you think? Keep the airy beige or go with the moody grey?
I tried a few gray tones before liking this one, Wild Truffle, best. Now the real question is whether it looks like anything like this in person. Wild Truffle looks a bit more green on the swatch than gray but maybe its one of those colors that look different on the wall (gray is such a tough nut to crack!). I know better than anyone to never trust a computer screen or paint swatch. Decisions, decisions.

ReplyDeleteFor a beach/shore house I love the light, bright, casual look. That having been said, I do think the gray tones would look good set against all the whites and creams you have in your room. If it were mine I would choose a lighter shade of gray to get the best of both worlds.

ReplyDeleteI usually like grey but in your shore house, I think the yellow is perfect. Light, airy and beachy. Plus it is a nice contrast to your Brooklyn home. Just my two cents.

ReplyDeleteI love that shade of grey which i have used in both my bedrooms on the wall behind the beds, and in my smaller bedroom on the three-door wardrobe and a little chair too (with a lovely cream that has a touch of grey with it. My dining room bookcase is the grey, as is the mirror surround, and I am about to do my downstairs toilet (what do you call them in the US? half baths? with toilet and wash basin. I find it a lovely deep but not dark kind of colour that goes with so many other colours and is ageless. You may also find it hides small fingerprints too (haha!)
ReplyDeleteYep I agree with the few that said for the shore, the lighter color works. I think it looks more airy and light. But I don't think the grey is a bad choice, just not as coastal as the lighter color.

ReplyDeleteHere's why I think the grey works for the beach, house (besides having seen beach houses done in grey): Because it's more like an accent than the actual main color and that's because you have so much white on your walls in the framed artwork. All the paint does is sort of "frame" the artwork and make everything else in the room that's light and bright pop. So it doesn't feel too dark for the beach to me...although possibly going a bit lighter would address that if it really is bothersome to you. I just read a blog post the other day, and I'm bummed I can't remember which blogger it was, who talked about every grey starts as another color. So if you like a certain color family, start with that and work your way out to the grey. Of course, making sure that whatever the foundation color is works with your existing furniture, rug, artwork etc. Oh, and also, don't forget to check what's going on outside the windows. That is an important consideration, because having your walls clash with the view/surroundings can be unsettling at best. Hope my 2 cents helps a little!

ReplyDeleteI'm not feeling the grey, especially with your wood floor color, rug and the window treatments. Too much contrast. I would go for a dark, rich chocolate brown. I painted my two story open foyer and upstairs hallway a rich brown and I love it. It looks amazing especially at Christmas! Brown color is very versatile. Love your LR as is now.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to mention that Benjamin Moore has some beautiful brown colors. As in Mrs. Blandings..... A warm, rich chocolate brown, not a dark flat brown that could look black. Dark, but not to suggest any other color but brown. :-)

ReplyDeleteI don't think a dark color is the way to go. I like the idea of airy for a beach home. Perhaps you could bring in a little drama with pillows and or a rug. As pretty as the room is you may be feeling you need a change for this reason. A little contrast is always good.

I've been contemplating the exact same thing lately. For in the living room. I think I might try it one day when the Mr. is out, you know as an umm, surprise! Or maybe at least do one wall, like an accent. I have no idea on color though.
