Shhhh! Don't tell Mr. Limestone but I've been itching to repaint our shore living room with a more dramatic driftwood gray tone. I don't dislike the color I have now but I think I'm ready for a change.
So when MyColortopia rolled out a new tool on their site that lets you upload a photo and virtually paint your room, I had to try it out. (Normally I would use photoshop to do the same thing but this tool is a lot easier.) It's aptly called Color My Room and its perfect for mentally trying a color on for size without getting hands dirty.
I uploaded my photo, selected the areas to be painted and the tool gave me an idea of what it would look like...
So what do you think? Keep the airy beige or go with the moody grey?
I tried a few gray tones before liking this one, Wild Truffle, best. Now the real question is whether it looks like anything like this in person. Wild Truffle looks a bit more green on the swatch than gray but maybe its one of those colors that look different on the wall (gray is such a tough nut to crack!). I know better than anyone to never trust a computer screen or paint swatch. Decisions, decisions.
disclosure: I write for MyColortopia but all of the thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.
Ooooh, I really like the gray. I think you should go for it.
ReplyDeleteGray. Most definitely. It looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the gray, but I think that particular gray may be a little too dark. Just my thought.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the Wild Truffle! Test it out by painting under one of the large prints to the right. :)
ReplyDeleteWe recently went dark and dramatic in our living room and I couldn't love it more. It's unexpectedly cozy!
ReplyDeleteGo gray, without a doubt! Run, do not walk, to the paint store!
ReplyDeleteGray all the way and change the rug while you are at it.
ReplyDeleteOh, I really like the grey! Nice contrast with all the light colored furnishings.
ReplyDeleteI really like the gray. It doesn't feel very beachy though. Not that it has to but just sayin.
ReplyDeleteGray!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the moody grey! LIke a storm is coming!!!
ReplyDeleteRamblings of a Suburban Mom
Definitely the grey!!!! Thanks for sharing, I can't wait to try this in my dining room.
ReplyDeletelove that dark n stormy gray.
ReplyDeleteheck white looks so crisp with it.
pve
I have a similar grey in my spare room and LOVE IT! Can't remember the color at the moment.
ReplyDeleteI like the grey. It's more modern.
ReplyDeleteFor a beach/shore house I love the light, bright, casual look. That having been said, I do think the gray tones would look good set against all the whites and creams you have in your room. If it were mine I would choose a lighter shade of gray to get the best of both worlds.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure no matter your choice it will look fabulous as all your projects do. Can't wait to see what you decide!
I like the grey, especially if everything else is staying the same.
ReplyDeletegrey!
ReplyDeleteohhhh I love the grey!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the grey!!!
ReplyDeleteGrey!
ReplyDeleteI usually like grey but in your shore house, I think the yellow is perfect. Light, airy and beachy. Plus it is a nice contrast to your Brooklyn home. Just my two cents.
ReplyDeletei'm fond of the grey. i like the contrast between the beige furniture and accents and the grey wall. either way, it's pretty.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely go grey!! It will look amazing especially with your cushions!!
ReplyDeleteI love that shade of grey which i have used in both my bedrooms on the wall behind the beds, and in my smaller bedroom on the three-door wardrobe and a little chair too (with a lovely cream that has a touch of grey with it. My dining room bookcase is the grey, as is the mirror surround, and I am about to do my downstairs toilet (what do you call them in the US? half baths? with toilet and wash basin. I find it a lovely deep but not dark kind of colour that goes with so many other colours and is ageless. You may also find it hides small fingerprints too (haha!)
ReplyDeleteYep I agree with the few that said for the shore, the lighter color works. I think it looks more airy and light. But I don't think the grey is a bad choice, just not as coastal as the lighter color.
ReplyDeleteThe beige is just more fresh and "beachy" to me.
ReplyDeleteI think you should definitely go for it. It adds a lot more contrast. And I think the days of "everything washed out" beachy should be behind us....
ReplyDeleteI love beige!
ReplyDeleteHmmm-I like the grey, but I think something lighter would be better for a beachy/breezy feel...
ReplyDeleteI think you should meet these two colors in the middle and go with a greige such as BM Revere Pewter. It would look perfect.

ReplyDeleteI love grey... if its done right. I think grey would update everything nicely. For a seaside sanctuary I would go with something a shade or two lighter. Have a happy weekend:)
ReplyDeletegray gray gray!!!! did i mention i think gray?
ReplyDeleteMoody gray FTW!
ReplyDeleteHere's why I think the grey works for the beach, house (besides having seen beach houses done in grey): Because it's more like an accent than the actual main color and that's because you have so much white on your walls in the framed artwork. All the paint does is sort of "frame" the artwork and make everything else in the room that's light and bright pop. So it doesn't feel too dark for the beach to me...although possibly going a bit lighter would address that if it really is bothersome to you. I just read a blog post the other day, and I'm bummed I can't remember which blogger it was, who talked about every grey starts as another color. So if you like a certain color family, start with that and work your way out to the grey. Of course, making sure that whatever the foundation color is works with your existing furniture, rug, artwork etc. Oh, and also, don't forget to check what's going on outside the windows. That is an important consideration, because having your walls clash with the view/surroundings can be unsettling at best. Hope my 2 cents helps a little!
ReplyDeleteI prefer the beige. I think the contrast between the gray and your furnishings is too drastic.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely moody grey!
ReplyDeleteI'm not feeling the grey, especially with your wood floor color, rug and the window treatments. Too much contrast. I would go for a dark, rich chocolate brown. I painted my two story open foyer and upstairs hallway a rich brown and I love it. It looks amazing especially at Christmas! Brown color is very versatile. Love your LR as is now.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to mention that Benjamin Moore has some beautiful brown colors. As in Mrs. Blandings..... A warm, rich chocolate brown, not a dark flat brown that could look black. Dark, but not to suggest any other color but brown. :-)
ReplyDeleteI agree, the beige is sorta played out. Maybe check out bleygeen? http://segretosecrets.squarespace.com/segreto/2012/10/21/blaygeen-bley-geen-the-perfect-shade-of-blue-gray-green.html
ReplyDeleteI am normally a fan of beige but that gray looks pretty sharp!
ReplyDeleteGRAY!!
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one over the gray? I say keep it as is.
ReplyDeleteKeep it the way it is. Gray is so over done these days. The dark color does nothing to enhance your space. Choose a cheery lighter color if you must change it. www.reuzeitmn.com
ReplyDeleteI don't think a dark color is the way to go. I like the idea of airy for a beach home. Perhaps you could bring in a little drama with pillows and or a rug. As pretty as the room is you may be feeling you need a change for this reason. A little contrast is always good.
ReplyDeleteBoth are nice.... but GRAY
ReplyDeleteGrey
ReplyDeleteI love the gray, it looks so lovely with your pictures and rugs, and cushions.
ReplyDeleteThat paint tool seems great, I think I will download it for my next decorating project.
I've been contemplating the exact same thing lately. For in the living room. I think I might try it one day when the Mr. is out, you know as an umm, surprise! Or maybe at least do one wall, like an accent. I have no idea on color though.
ReplyDeleteI love the grey, go for it.
Grey grey grey!
ReplyDeleteGrey!
ReplyDeleteMoody grey, or maybe a beige with a grey tint. The color through our house is kind of a mix and we love it.
ReplyDeleteGo grey, but something lighter and more airy. A crisp grey rather than a dark moody grey would still provide enough contrast wouldn't it?
ReplyDeleteWe bloggers love us some grey! I love the contrast between all the light furniture against a darker wall. Really any color looks great with all white furniture. The light walls keep it airy though. I am no help at all lol!
ReplyDeleteGRAY! Another commenter mentioned changing the rug. . . Not a bad idea! What about these?

ReplyDeleteI think you should paint, but I would choose a navy blue!
ReplyDeleteMoody grey without a doubt!
ReplyDeletehello
ReplyDeleteI want to buy good re seller hosting, a friend of mine recommended me www.elcoplanet.com have you ever heard about them. i have checked there web site and it seems that they offer chip prices and good performances unlimited web hosting space and unlimited bandwidth.
Hmm, I'm going to be no help at all because I really like both. But I think if pressed, I would choose the gray because I like the contrast it brings and makes the art and drapes stand out more.
ReplyDeleteGray color is better then other. I would love to modify my room like this.
ReplyDeleteI totally vote for the gray! I want to paint my living room a deep sexy gray but don't have the guts for it quite yet.
