High chair choice

Thanks to everyone who lent a hand on our high chair shopping. We ended up going with the OXO Sprout which wasn't even on my radar until you recommended it.

Aggie isnt quite sure what to make of it but enjoyed the new vantage point during her first sit. We are a few weeks from using it for eating but so far we like how easy it was to put together, the small footprint and the simple design. Hopefully we made the right choice but only time will tell.

Now if only all baby items had so many good choices! My next target is cushioned playmat that doesn't look like a clown exploded on it. This one from Skip Hop isn't so terrible but I would much prefer fewer colors.  This Tadpoles grey faux wood looks cool in the photo but has no reviews so I'm leary. And this round Nook Lilypad has a nice texture but the orange is very loud.  Suggestions?

The reviews on that faux wood mat in a different colour are less than stellar, so you might be right to be leary! http://www.amazon.com/Tadpoles-Wood-Print-Playmat-Natural/dp/B003ZYEEDM/ref=pd_cp_ba_3

I like the skip hop one!

  2. We have the Skip Hop mat and it is easily damaged. Our cat left claw marks in it and when I walked on it wearing heels, little indentations were left behind that never went away. I know it's more expensive, but if I had to choose again, I would get a cushy rug and mat. That way, you can choose whatever style you like!

  3. I agree with Amber re: getting a rug instead. I never had a playmat for my J since we had carpeting and sometimes I put down a large blanket for more comfort and it always worked just fine. PS Your girl is BEAUTIFUL~!

  4. We never used a foam playmat. Luca doesn't seem to mind playing wherever to be honest. PLUS once Agatha starts crawling, good luck getting her to stay on the mat :-)

That said, my 2 cents is that if you do want a mat like that, get the Skip Hop one. As much as we don't want to mess with our homes, kids really do like bright colours and since this is a temporary item, just get something that works and that maybe will be attractive to your little girl.

(as an aside, I've tried to stay away from bright plastic toys in favour of nice wooden stuff, and as soon as Luca comes within 25 feet of something bright and plastic, he BEELINES for it. Seriously.)

    1. I second the comment about good luck getting her to stay on the mat once she starts moving! Our guy is 7 months on Friday and while he's not officially crawling, he's moving and the mat isn't really working very well anymore. If you really want one though, consider an exercise mat. If I had wood floors, I'd do an easy clean rug (so that you can wipe up all the spit up easily!)

  5. i was just looking on etsy - it would be worth a look. you have to dig a bit with all the quilted pieces...but there were some nice options. with some good colors.

  6. I know it's a little bit clown vomity looking, but our 4-month old loves this one. The animals all have the crinkly that they love at this age and the removable flower sings to her, which makes her laugh and laugh.

  7. I'm looking for one myself. Yours is cute, but I don't think I want to spend anywhere near that amount. I'm just bummed that we got rid of our last one:(

  8. Blanket on the floor!

OneStepAhead has a faux wood playmat, but it looks like their website is currently closed.

    1. Totally agree.... Put a blanket on the floor and spend your money on something else.

  9. We finally wised up with our third child and took a nice "new" twin quilt we got at Land of Nod and would fold it into quarters, the colors loooked better and less baby explosionish .... we could flip it and fold differently a few times, then throw it in the wash. As he got bigger and more mobile we could unfold it to expand his little world. THEN, when he out grew it, we just threw it at the foot of his bed...He still has it and he is 12...it is sweet and faded and reminds me of my baby.

  10. We have a similar playmat by Skip Hop and it is more trouble than it's worth. Like another commenter said, it is easily damaged (ours has bite marks). It is also not very practical to put away and set up because there are so many pieces.

Personally, I would rate a playmat as an unnecessary baby item and suggest using a blanket or soft rug.

  11. So glad you got the Oxo chair, we love ours

I had the same issue with play mats, just didn't want our small space to look like a daycare. Instead we got a padded foam rug pad and put our rug over it. Came in handy under the living room rug as our daughter was learning to walk and now that she is more active and is trying to climb up on the sofa. We recently got one for her room too.

  12. Try the Bestever Play Mats. There isn't a lot of interaction (buzzer noises), but it allows for a soft landing pad. Plus, when they get bigger they can drag it around like a stuffed animal. My son has the monkey and we get comments all of the time. I can't count how many times he fell over without a crying mess. Yahoo!

  14. I wanted to see if you were happy with your high chair choice. I love the oxo chair but can't get myself to pull the trigger. If it really can grow with my son awhile, I think it would be a great purchase, but I wonder how long he really will use it.

    1. I absolutely love it! I can't really compare to other models since this is the only one I have but I'm really glad I didn't get the stokke because having a big tray that is easy to clean is really important. It's very easy to pull the tray on and off and the whole thing is easy to clean. Once she is bigger, we can remove the tray and just pull it up to the table. Highly recommend.
