I've never been an organized person but it's become especially bad recently. My junk drawers have multiplied and I'm often losing things. Something must be done. I ran into these 52 week organizing challenges (like this one) online but wondering if anyone has done one of these. Did it work? It seems like a never ending problem.

During our shore renovations, I didn't plan on a toddler that will not sleep well if she can see and/or hear us. So I'm racking my brain for easy ways to divide the bedroom so we can all get some rest (and strongly resisting the desire to do another mini renovation in there!). Anyone with great space planning expertise out there?

I'm tweaking the blog layout which means I need to tweak some of the sidebars/blog roll. Have a suggestion of a site or category to add? Please let me know.
Hello Brooklyn. Non-sleeping child in your bedroom..... I wonder if you can put Agatha in another room? I know it is a tiny space, but is there a chance that she could have a "secret" bed in the living room? Something that rolls under furniture, folds down from the wall, unfolds from a footstool? Because however you do this, unless she is in a soundproof box (not good), she will hear you!! Best of luck there
ReplyDeleteMrs Mac.
She goes to bed a lot earlier than us so she is okay in the bedroom until we go to bed. It's only when she she wakes up in the middle of the night and sees us laying a few feet away that she thinks its party time!
DeleteIn other words, I need that soundproof box in the bedroom. I'm trying to come up with all kinds of ways to close off a little area in the bedroom so that she can't see or hear us but due to windows and closets, its not as easy as I had hoped.
moveable room divider/screen?
ReplyDeletethat is the idea but trying to find something that is functional and not ugly isn't as easy as you would think.
DeleteI second the screen idea. And white noise. It will drown out the sound as you are getting ready for bed. Then just turn it down and then off when you are ready to sleep. You can get free apps for your phone or tablet.
ReplyDeleteWhen we aren't in the room its not really a factor..its only once she rouses in the middle of the night and sees us (or maybe hears us tossing and turning?) that she gets up. Maybe the white noise would help with that if we left it on all night but not ideal. Just want to do something that looks intentional rather than just putting up a screen.
DeleteJordan and I would love it if you would add our blog, The 2 Seasons, to your sidebar. You are on ours.
ReplyDeleteHi Janette - I had to double check b/c I could have sworn you were already on there. I know I have you on my reader so it was an oversight :)
DeleteMy toddler has been the same way...we always take a fan with us to act as white noise. I can't stand an actual white noise machine, but the fan gives us enough of a buffer she doesn't stir when we enter/leave the room or just move the covers. I often drape a blanket over the outside edge of her pack 'n play after she's fallen asleep so she can't see us when she wakes up unless she stands up.
ReplyDeleteI second the fan. A box fan pointed at the wall is the absolute best (and perhaps cheapest) white noise machine.
ReplyDeleteOr... Could you hang blackout curtains so she can't see you? As previous comment states, when we're away from home we drape a blanket over the side of the pack n play so our toddler can't see us through the mesh and so any light coming in can't reach her.
ReplyDeleteJust a question--our son Miles is 1 month older than Agatha and my husband and I travel a lot with our jobs (we flew 38,000 miles with him in his first year--he definitely lives up to his name!) When he was little he would sleep in a pack and play or crib in our room, but as he got older he refused to sleep in the same room with us unless he is in our bed (and basically nursing all night as he woke up.) We were blessed on recent extended trips to be able to stay in rental houses and put him in another bedroom away from us, but next week we will be in NYC for 3 nights and I know we'll have this same problem again! I've finally weaned him to just nursing when he wakes up and at bedtime, but I have no idea what I will do with him in our hotel room, and trying to put him to bed without him sleeping in our bed. What did you guys do on your recent trip to Paris?
ReplyDeleteOh I'll have to ask my husband how many miles she flew in her first year...thats a fun fact :)
DeleteWe generally try to rent apartments or stay in suites when we go away just like you do (Agatha wont really sleep in our bed much - she just thinks its playtime). It s definitely worth the added expense IMO. In Paris we were using points to stay in a suite but found out that the "suite" just meant a larger room rather than a separate sleeping area. We were going to pay to upgrade to a room with separate bedroom but as it turns out, the room we did have had a huge walk in closet (much bigger than her bedroom at home complete with closet and Juliet balcony!) so we put the pack n play in there and it worked out perfectly. On another trip we put her crib in the bathroom. I just do my best to find a spot as far removed as possible from our bed and that usually works out. I'm hoping she eventually becomes a more sound sleeper but until then, you do what you have to do!
Hope you have a great trip to NYC!
Thanks so much for responding! My husband is doing some talk shows next week and they usually put us up in some nice places that have bigger bathrooms (like Essex House or the Ritz-Carlton), so we may try that! We stopped in Paris last year for a few days after a business trip to Cannes, and I so wish we had gotten an apartment--our room was so tiny so he had to sleep with us. It was our first time to France and we just didn't know--we will definitely know for next time! :) That's so great that your suite in Paris worked out! Yes, I am completely jealous of people who have kids this age that just conk out and don't wake up no matter how much noise you make. Miles has slept with a white noise machine since he was born and he still wakes up at the slightest noise. :/
DeleteBeing an Ikea gal I pour over their catalogs and spend lots of time roaming their store. They carry ceiling mount hardware that lets you use curtain fabrics similar to hospital curtains. If you have an unusual shape to conquer it would be easy with this. And whatever your fabric needs are can be easily accommodated....lined so she can't see thru. It will be interesting to see what your solution will be. As an infant & toddler our son was a very light sleeper. I couldn't even sneak into his room with socks on to put his laundry on the dresser! My fault - hubby worked nights and I didn't make any noise for him to learn to sleep. The problem is solved. He's 47 and lives in another state now.....:-)
ReplyDeleteI have seen a lovely studio apartment online somewhere where the renter built a wooden frame around the bed and hung lovely fabric from it creating a room within a room if that makes sense. Something like that might work on a smaller scale for around Agatha bed. It could have a den like feel for her. Maybe you would prefer something less complicated but it really did look lovely.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds pretty perfect. I'd love to see a photo if you have one.
DeleteIt has been driving me crazy that I couldn't remember where I had seen this room. I stumbled back to it by chance today and thought of you. I hope the link works.http://theprojectoryhandcrafts.com/2013/12/20/how-i-turned-my-studio-apartment-into-a-one-bedroom/

DeleteI'm not usually one to comment, but some smart people have already invented a solution to this common problem! Its called sleepaway baby, google it. Its not gorgeous but I know it works!! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea this product existed. Not sure if it will work but it's worth a shot. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
